USA Wins First Worlds Men's Gold in 92 Years

Tage Thompson (UConn) scored just over two minutes into 3-on-3 overtime to lift the United States to a 1-0 victory over Switzerland today in the 2025 IIHF World Championship gold medal game in Stockholm, Sweden. It is the first men's World's gold for the U.S. since 1933, while the Swiss finished second for the fourth time overall.

Logan Cooley (Minnesota) and Brady Skjei (Minnesota) assisted on Thompson's goal, while Jeremy Swayman (Maine) stopped 25 shots in net for Team USA. Sweden took third this year by defeating Denmark in the bronze medal game, while Canada, Czechia, Finland and Austria rounded out the top eight. Next year's tournament will be held in Switzerland.

U.S. Wins Women's World Title Again


Hilary Knight (Wisconsin) snapped home a shot from the slot with 9:43 left overtime to boost the U.S. Women’s National Team to a 3-2 victory over Canada in the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship in Plymouth, Mich. The win marked the seventh time in the last eight years that the U.S. earned the tournament’s gold medal.
Kacey Bellamy (New Hampshire) scored America’s first two goals on the evening at USA Hockey Arena, while Nicole Hensley (Lindenwood) made 28 saves for the U.S. Meghan Agosta (Mercyhurst) and Brianne Jenner (Cornell) tallied goals for Canada, while Shannon Szabados (MacEwan) stopped 37 shots. The U.S. outshot Canada, 40-28, before 3,917 on-lookers.

The two squads are expected to meet again at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea in February.

U.S. Wins Bronze at World Championships

The United States won its second medal in three years at the IIHF World Championships with a 3-0 victory over the host Czech Republic on Sunday in the bronze medal game.

Connor Hellebucyk (UMass Lowell) made 39 saves for the U.S. against the Czechs, winning his seventh game of the tournament, while Nick Bonino (Boston University) and Charlie Coyle (Boston University) each contributed a goal and an assist to the American effort. 2015 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner Jack Eichel (Boston University) also posted an assist, according to USAHockey.com.
 
The U.S. squad was led by head coach Todd Richards (Minnesota) and assistant coach Dan Bylsma (Bowling Green). The two U.S. World Championship medals in three years is a first since 1952, while the Americans’ eight wins in 10 games this spring is their most ever in a single World Championship event. The U.S. also won bronze in 2013 in Sweden/Finland.

Canada won gold this year by defeating Russia, 6-1, in the championship game. The Russians blanked the U.S., 4-0, in the semifinal round. The Americans' only other loss was to Belarus, 5-2, in preliminary round play, although they still finished first in Group 'B'.

The 2016 IIHF Word Championship will be played in Russia.

U.S., Canada Win at Worlds



Brock Nelson (North Dakota) scored a goal, Craig Smith (Wisconsin) tallied an assist, and Tim Thomas (Vermont) made 22 saves as the United States outlasted Finland, 3-1, on Sunday in preliminary-round play at the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk, Belarus. Both Thomas and the Americans improved to 4-2-0 in the tournament.
Ben Scrivens (Cornell) made 22 stops as Canada outlasted Sweden, 3-2, in overtime Sunday. Canada is now 5-1 and in first place in Group A. The U.S. will now face Germany on Tuesday, while Canada will take on Norway that same day to conclude pool play. Both North American squads have clinched quarterfinal berths.
