U.S. Advances to World Championship Semifinals
Charlie Coyle (Boston University) tallied a goal and an assist, and Ben Smith (Boston College) scored off a setup from Jimmy Vesey (Harvard) as the United States defeated Switzerland, 3-1, in a quarterfinal contest at the 2015 IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic.
Jake Gardiner (Wisconsin) scored the third American goal off an assist from Coyle to close out the scoring, as the U.S. battled back from a 1-0 deficit. Connor Hellebuyck (UMass Lowell) made 21 saves for the fourth consecutive contest as the Americans won for the seventh time in eight games in the tournament. Hellebucyk has gone 6-0 with one shutout in the Czech Republic, allowing just eight goals in all.
The U.S. will now face Russia in a semifinal match on Saturday. The victor will play the winner of Canada and the Czech Republic for the world title.
