Major College Hockey Awards Handed Out

Four major college hockey awards were handed out Friday night at the NCAA Frozen Four in Las Vegas.

Sophomore forward Max Plante (Minnesota-Duluth) earned this year's Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in NCAA Division I men's college hockey. Hailing from Hermantown, Minn., he paced the Bulldogs with career-high totals of 27 goals and 25 assists for 52 points in 40 games, while also leading UMD to the NCAA tournament. He is the 11th player from the state of Minnesota to win the Hobey Baker, and the seventh Bulldog, both tops among the award's 44 winners all-time.

Junior netminder Trey Augustine (Michigan State) claimed this year's Mike Richter Award as the nation's top goaltender. A native of South Lyon, Mich., he fashioned a 24-9-1 record in 34 games this past season, with a 2.11 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage, while earning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year accolades. He is now a member of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. 

Senior forward Meg Simon (Middlebury) was the 2026 recipient of the Hockey Humanitarian Award. Originally from East Grand Rapids, Mich., she is the fifth skater from the NCAA Division III ranks to earn the award. She serves as the Co-Chair of Volunteering for Middlebury's women’s hockey program, and has worked with the Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) and Special Olympics Vermont, among other organizations, both on and off campus. Simon tallied two assists in 39 career games with the Panthers while helping them to three NCAA tournament berths and two semifinal appearances.

Senior forward Kevin Anderson (Princeton) was this year's recipient of the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award, named for the late Army skater, and which is bequeathed to the player judged to best exemplify sportsmanship, competitiveness, intelligence and work ethic. Anderson, from Regina, Sask., has helped create and cultivate the “Tiger Pals” program that pairs Princeton student-athletes with local children who need strong, consistent mentorship, and has also hosted his “Tiger Pals” program at Hobey Baker Rink for skates, games and social gatherings with the Tigers, while also serving with Team IMPACT. He finished his college career with 7-11-18 points in 87 games for Princeton, which came within an overtime goal of this year's NCAA tournament.

Freshman forward Ethan Wyttenbach (Quinnipiac) was named the winner of the 2026 Tim Taylor Award, which is named after the former longtime Yale head coach and goes to the Rookie of the Year in NCAA Division I men's hockey. A native of Roslyn, N.Y., Wyttenbach  paced all Division I men's scorers with 59 points (25g-34a) this past season while also leading the Bobcats to the NCAA tournament. He was drafted 144th overall by the Calgary Flames in last year's NHL Entry Draft.

Three MSU Spartans Turn Pro

Michigan State will have to do without three key contributors going forward, all of whom recently signed NHL contracts.

Freshman right wing Porter Martone was the first to go, signing on Sunday with the Philadelphia Flyers, who drafted him sixth overall last year. Martone, 19, paced the Spartans this past year with 25 goals and 50 points in his only NCAA campaign, after skating three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League. The Peterborough, Ont. native, who played in two IIHF World Junior Championships for Canada, made his NHL debut on March 31 at Washington, and picked up his first pro point with an assist against Detroit tonight. 

Junior goaltender Trey Augustine has signed with the Detroit Red Wings, who selected him 41st overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and has been assigned to Detroit's top minor-league affiliate in Grand Rapids (AHL). Augustine, 21, from South Lyon, Mich. fashioned a 24-9-1 record in 34 games this past season, with a 2.11 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage, while earning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year accolades. In three years with the Spartans, he went 66-25-7 with a 2.40 GAA over 99 career outings while notching nine shutouts and backstopping MSU to three consecutive Big Ten conference regular-season titles and two tournament crowns. He also won two gold medals with the U.S. at the WJCs, after prepping with the U.S. National Junior Team Development Program, and is a finalist this year for both the Mike Richter Award (top NCAA goalie) and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award (top NCAA player). 

Junior defenseman Maxim Strbak has signed with the Buffalo Sabres, who drafted him 45th overall in 2023, and has been assigned to Rochester (AHL). Strbak, 20, from Kosice, Slovakia, notched three goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 37 games this past season with MSU, and in three years in East Lansing collected 8-38—46 points over 102 appearances. A product of Sioux Falls (USHL), he also participated in four consecutive WJCs for Slovakia. 

MSU's 2025-26 campaign ended with a 4-3 overtime loss to Big Ten rival Wisconsin in the NCAA Worcester (Mass.) Regional final on March 29, one game short of the Frozen Four. 

ADDENDUM: Michigan State sophomore defenseman Colin Ralph and senior forward Daniel Russell have also signed pro contracts, with the St. Louis Blues and Wilkes-Barre Scranton (AHL), respectively. Ralph, 20, from Maple Grove, Minn., collected 2-16—18 points in 69 career games with St. Cloud State and MSU, after being drafted 48th overall by the Blues in 2024. Russell, from Traverse City, Mich., totaled 43-70—113 points in 140 career outings at MSU, after playing three years in the USHL and one in the NAHL. 

2026 Richter Award Finalists Named

The three finalists for the 2026 Mike Richter Award as the top goaltender in NCAA Division I men's hockey were named last week. Player are listed by last name with their class, school, record, goals-against average and save percentage this season:

• Trey Augustine, Jr., Michigan State (23-8-1, 2.08, .929) 
• Michael Hrabal, Jr., UMass (19-9-1, 1.95, .937)
• Josh Kotai, Jr., Augustana (20-11-4,  1.99, .938)

Augustine is the only repeat Richter finalist this year, and is also a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. He and Hrabal have led their teams to this year's NCAA tournament, while Kotai just signed an entry-level professional contract with the NHL's New York Islanders. 

The winner of this year's Richter Award will be announced during the Frozen Four in Las Vegas next month.

Wyttenbach leads the nation in points, while Stavroff is first in goals scored and McKenna is second in assists. Five of the finalist have already been drafted by National Hockey League teams, while McKenna is expected to go in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft. 

This year's Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced next month during the NCAA Frozen Four in Las Vegas.

2026 Richter Award Top 10 Announced

A list of the 10 semifinalists for the Mike Richter Award, which is annually awarded to the top goaltender in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey, was released last week, according to collegehockeynews.com:

Augustine is currently third among Division I men's netminders with 20 victories so far this season, while Ivankovic is fourth with 18 wins, and Tracy is first with five ties. Kotai is second with 1,080 minutes played, while Tracy is fourth with 1,755 minutes. Tracy is fourth with a 1.91 goals-against average, while Augustine is fifth (1.96) and Kotai is 10th (2.06). Kotai and Zacher are tied for the national lead with four shutouts, while Kotai ranks first overall with 890 saves made, and is also tied with Muszelik for second overall with a .935 save percentage.

The 2026 Mike Richter Award winner will be announced on April 10 at the Frozen Four in Las Vegas.

MSU Wins Third Straight Duel in the D

For the third year in a row, the "Duel in the D" went to Michigan State. Second-ranked MSU scored the first four goals of the game en route to a 5-2 victory over No. 1 Michigan tonight before 19,515 onlookers at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. MSU also avenged a 4-3 overtime loss last night in Ann Arbor to gain the series split, while also leapfrogging the Wolverines by one point for first place in the Big Ten conference.

Tiernan Shoudy and Tommi Männistö tallied a goal and an assist each for MSU (22-6-0 overall, 13-5-0 Big Ten), while Maxim Štrbák notched two assists. Trey Augustine made 25 saves for the Spartans, while Jack Ivankovic stopped 34 shots for Michigan (23-5-0, 14-4-0) in his return to action since suffering an injury in mid-January. MSU outshot Michigan, 37-27, on the night, and also killed off all three Michigan power play attempts while recording two shorthanded shots on goal.

MSU is at Notre Dame on Feb. 20-21, while Michigan will host Penn State next weekend.

Michigan State Tops Wisconsin, 4-3

Charlie Stramel scored the game-winning goal in the second period, and also had an assist as fourth-ranked Michigan State edged No. 2 Wisconsin, 4-3, tonight at the Kohl Center. It was MSU's first victory against Wisconsin this season, after the Badgers swept a two-game series in East Lansing, Mich., back in November. All three games have been decided by one goal.

Ryker Lee, Gavin O'Connell and Daniel Russell also scored for the victorious Spartans (16-5-0 overall, 7-4-0 Big Ten), who got 24 saves in net from Trey Augustine. Oliver Tulk, Kyle Kukkonen and Tyson Dyck scored the host Badgers (15-4-2 8-3-0), who got 19 stops from Daniel Hauser. The Spartans outshot the Badgers, 27-23, on the evening, while the two teams combined to go 0-for-5 on the power play.

MSU and Wisconsin will close out their 2025-26 season series on Friday night in Madison.

MSU, Michigan Tech Win GLI Semifinals

Charlie Stramel scored two goals and assisted on another as third-ranked Michigan State defeated Ferris State, 5-1, in a Great Lakes Invitational semifinal on Sunday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. Trey Augustine made 20 stops for the Spartans (13-4-0 overall), who are seeking their second consecutive GLI title. Hobie Hedquist stopped 18 of 19 shots in relief for the Bulldogs (4-15-0).

MSU will face Michigan Tech (11-6-2) in the final tonight ( 7 p.m. ET, BiG+). The Huskies defeated Miami, 5-2, in the others semifinal, as Stiven Sardarian scored two goals and set up another, and Owen Bartoszkiewicz stopped 26 shots. Matteo Drobca made 28 saves for the Red Hawks (10-7-2), who will face Ferris in the consolation game.

ADDENDUM: Stramel scored two more goals, including the game-winner, and earned tournament MVP accolades as MSU topped MTU, 4-1, to win its second straight GLI title. Miami won the consolation game over Ferris, 4-2.

Michigan Blanks MSU in Opener, 3-0

Michigan held on to its No. 1 ranking with a 3-0 win in Big Ten play last night at third-ranked Michigan State. It was the Wolverines' first shutout of MSU at Munn Ice Arena since February 2000.

Malcolm Spence scored just over five minutes into the contest to give Michigan a 1-0 lead, before Aidan Park and Jayden Perron closed out the scoring in the third period. Jack Ivankovic made 23 saves for the Wolverines (16-3-0 overall, 7-2-0 Big Ten), who have won five straight games, while Trey Augustine finished with 24 stops for the host Spartans (11-4-0, 4-3-0).

The two archrivals will close out their home-and-home series tonight at Michigan's Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor (7 p.m. ET, BIG+).

ADDENDUM: Anthony Romani scored in both the second and third periods, including the game-winning goal, and Trey Augustine made 30 saves as MSU rebounded for a 3-1 win in the rematch at Michigan. The Spartans scored the final three goals of the game, and outshot the Wolverines, 33-31, on the night. The two schools will meet again on Feb. 6 in Ann Arbor, and then again on Feb. 7 in Detroit.

MSU Hockey Tops Both Polls Again

Michigan State University remained atop the major NCAA Division I men's hockey polls for a fourth straight week. The Spartans earned all 50 first-place votes in this week's USCHO.com poll, and also again topped the USA Hockey poll while garnering all 34 of those first-place ballots.

No. 1 MSU is coming off a two-step sweep of visiting Big Ten rival Penn State over the weekend, winning by 2-1 and 5-0 scores at Munn Ice Arena. Tiernan Shoudy notched the game-winning goal in overtime in the opener, before Charlie Stramel scored two goals and set up two others in the clincher. Spartan netminder Trey Augustine stopped 60 out of 61 shots against on the weekend, including 36 saves for the shutout in the second contest.

MSU (7-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 Big Ten) returns to conference action on Nov. 14-15 with two games at Notre Dame.

Spartans Sweep No. 1 BU on the Road

There will be a new No. 1 team in NCAA Division I men's college hockey next week. Michigan State University saw to that. 

The third-ranked Spartans knocked No. 1 Boston University from its pedestal following a two-step sweep this weekend at Agganis Arena in Boston.

On Friday, MSU (3-1-0 overall) got goals from four different players, and 18 saves from Trey Augustine, en route to a 4-2 victory, MSU's first win at BU since the 1950s. Gavin O'Connell and Matt Basgall also set up two goals apiece for the visiting Spartans. Mikhail Yegorov made 30 stops for the host Terriers. 

On Saturday, BU (2-2-1) scored three times in the third period to tie the contest, but Basgall connected just under four minutes into overtime to lift MSU to a 4-3 win, its third straight triumph overall. Augustine made 31 saves for the Spartans, who also got a goal and an assist from Porter Marone, while Yegorov made 30 stops for BU.

MSU plays another non-conference series next weekend at Northern Michigan before opening its Big Ten slate, while BU will enter Hockey East play with a home-and-home series against UConn.

Michigan State, Penn State Bounce Back

Two top Big Ten teams bounced back from Thursday losses with NCAA non-conference victories on Friday.

No. 2 Michigan State, which fell to New Hampshire by a 4-3 count on a late goal Friday, rebounded for a 2-0 win the next night at Munn Arena. Matt Basgall and Patrick Geary scored for the Spartans, with both goals set up by Charlie Stramel, while Trey Augustine made 13 saves for MSU (1-1-0 overall).

No. 4 Penn State fell to visiting Clarkson, 6-4, on Friday despite getting four goals from JJ Wiebusch. The Nittany Lions (3-1-0) came back the following evening for a 5-2 triumph, as Ben Schoen scored twice and Joshua Fleming made 21 stops at Pegula Ice Arena.

MSU is off to No. 3 Boston University for two games next weekend, while PSU will host LIU for a pair of games.

MSU Routs Michigan, 6-1, in Detroit

The "Duel in the D" trophy will remain in East Lansing. Second-ranked Michigan State University routed No. 13 Michigan, 6-1, on Saturday night before 19,515 fans at Little Caesars Arena in the annual contest between the two archrivals in Detroit.

After Tyler Duke tied the game midway through the second period for Michigan, MSU erupted for five goals over the next 21 minutes to put the contest away. Six different skaters scored for the Spartans, who were led by Joey Larson's one goal and two assists. Shane Vansaghi, Gavin O'Connell and Isaac Howard notched a goal and an assist apiece for MSU, which also got two assists from Nicklas Andrews and finished two-for-five on the power play. Trey Augustine made 17 saves in net for the Spartans (22-5-3 overall, 13-4-3 Big Ten), and also added an assist. Cameron Korpi finished with 34 stops for the Wolverines (16-12-2, 10-9-1), who defeated MSU, 2-1, on Friday in East Lansing. 

It was the fourth and final game of the 2024-25 regular-season series between MSU and U-M, with each team winning twice. Their next meeting could come as early as this year's Big Ten tournament, and then possibly again in the NCAA tournament. MSU will entertain Notre Dame this weekend in Big Ten play, while U-M will host Minnesota.

Ohio State Edges Michigan State, 4-2

Gunnarwolfe Fontaine's goal just under eight minutes into the third period broke a two-all tie, and catapulted No. 11 Ohio State to a 4-2 victory last night over visiting No. 2 Michigan State in a Big Ten contest.

Riley Thompson scored two goals for OSU, and also assisted on Fontaine's game-winning wrist shot before 5,339 spectators in Columbus. Logan Terness made 35 saves in earning the win for the Buckeyes (16-7-2 overall, 9-5-1 Big Ten), who suffered a loss and a tie at Penn State last weekend. Thomas Weis scored an insurance goal for OSU late in the third period.

MSU (20-4-3, 11-3-3), which had already lost forward Red Savage to injury for the remainder of the 2024-25 NCAA season, suffered its first loss in regulation since Dec. 6 despite 25 stops on the night from Trey Augustine. David Gucciardi and Karsen Dorwart scored goals for the Spartans.

The Buckeyes and Spartans meet again tonight at Value City Arena to close out their season series. MSU swept OSU in a pair of games in East Lansing, Mich. back in November.

ADDENDUM: MSU gained the series split with a 4-1 win on Friday night, as four different Spartans scored goals and Augustine made 22 saves.

MSU Gains Split with Michigan

One night after a 3-2 loss in overtime on the road in Ann Arbor, top-ranked Michigan State gained a Big Ten series split with archrival Michigan with a 4-1 victory on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.

Wisconsin transfer Charlie Stramel scored two goals and set up another for the Spartans (19-3-2 overall, 10-2-2 Big Ten), who got three assists from Isaac Howard and 34 saves from Trey Augustine. Logan Stein made 28 stops for the No. 10 Wolverines (14-9-1, 8-6-0).

The two NCAA schools will close out their regular-season series on Feb. 7 in East Lansing and Feb. 8 in Detroit.

U.S. Wins Second Straight WJC Gold Medal

Teddy Stiga (Boston College) scored on a partial breakaway just over eight minutes into 3-on-3 overtime to lift the United States to a 4-3 win over Finland in the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal game tonight in Ottawa.

Team USA overcame deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-1 to claim its second straight WJC gold medal and seventh overall, all of them coming since 2004. James Hagens (Boston College) recorded the first U.S. goal to forge a 1-1 tie in the first period, while Brandon Svoboda (Boston University) and Cole Hutson (Boston University) tallied second-period scores to tie the contest at 3-3 after 40 minutes of play.

Ryan Leonard (Boston College), who earned tournament MVP honors, had two assists on the night, while Trey Augustine (Michigan State) made 21 saves in goal for the Americans. Hutson led all WJC scorers with three goals and eight assists for 11 points in seven games, while Leonard was third overall with 5-5—10 points and Augustine finished with a 2.52 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.

Czechia defeated Sweden, 3-2, in a shootout to claim the bronze medal. Next year's WJC will be contested in Minnesota, the first time it will be held in the U.S. since Buffalo in 2018.

USA Routs Germany in WJC Opener

Team USA is off to a good start at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa.

The United States routed Germany, 10-4, in its tournament opener today, as over a dozen American skaters recorded at least one point on the scoresheet. Cole Hutson (Boston University) set up five goals, while James Hagens (Boston College) scored two goals and assisted on two others. Gabe Perreault (Boston College) and Brodie Ziemer (Minnesota) scored twice apiece, with Perreault also adding an assist. Trey Augustine (Michigan State) stopped 18 shots for the Americans in earning the win.

The U.S. returns to WJC action on Saturday against Latvia.

ADDENDUM: Team USA topped Latvia, 5-1, before falling to Finland, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday.

Michigan State Downs No. 1 Minnesota

Minnesota was the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division men's hockey last week. It won't be this week, after suffering a 3-3 tie and a 5-3 loss to No. 3 Michigan State this weekend in a Big Ten conference series.

On Friday, Brodie Ziemer scored twice for Minnesota, including the game-tying goal in the third period, but the Golden Gophers fell in the shootout as MSU's Karsen Dorwart and Daniel Russell scored the only extra-session goals after a scoreless five-minute overttime. Trey Augustine made 40 saves in regulation for the visiting Spartans, plus two more in the shootout. 

On Saturday, MSU overcame a 3-1 deficit after 40 minutes by tallying four third-period goals, with Maxim Štrbák scoring one goal and setting up another. Isaac Howard scored twice for the Spartans (13-2-1 overall, 6-1-1 Big Ten), while Augustine made 24 stops in net. Liam Souliere had 25 stops for the Golden Gophers (15-3-2, 8-1-1), who saw a six-game unbeaten streak snapped this weekend.

The two schools will meet again on Jan. 24-25 in East Lansing, Mich.

BC Blanks MSU in Season Opener

Will Vote scored twice and Oskar Jellvik added another goal, all in the second period and at even strength, as second-ranked Boston College blanked No. 4 Michigan State by a 3-0 count tonight at MSU's Munn Ice Arena. BC is now 1-0-0 overall on the 2024-25 season, while MSU fell to 2-1-0. 

BC goaltender Jacob Fowler picked up his first shutout of the season, and the fourth of his NCAA career, with 24 saves, while five different Eagles recorded assists on the night. Trey Augustine stopped 26 shots for the Spartans, who were outshot, 29-24, and went 0-for-2 on the power play before 6,555 on-lookers. MSU still leads the all-time series between the two schools, 17-12-1, although BC has now won the last six meetings, including a pair at home last year.

The Eagles and Spartans wrap up their two-game series tomorrow night at Munn (6 p.m. ET, B1G+).

ADDENDUM: In the rematch, MSU got two goals from Wisconsin transfer Charlie Stramel, the game-winner from Daniel Russell late in the second period, and 32 saves in all from Augustine as the Spartans edged BC, 4-3. It was the 600th victory all-time for MSU at Munn, which first opened its doors in 1974. Jellvik had two assists for the Eagles, while Fowler made 25 stops.

Gilbert Joins MSU as Third Netminder

Michigan State has added a third goaltender for 2024-25. 

Dolan Gilbert has formally joined the Spartans as a junior, after practicing with them last season. A 6-foot-2 netminder from South Bend, Ind., Gilbert, 23, spent the 2022-23 season at NCAA Division III Concordia University/Wisconsin (NCHA), where he played in seven games, stopping 158 shots over 247 minutes. Prior to that, he played two seasons for the Texas Jr. Brahmas (NA3HL), where he fashioned a 40-7-2 record with a 2.07 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in 52 total appearances. 

Gilbert will now back up Trey Augustine (23-9-2, 2.96, .915) and Luca Di Pasquo (2-1-1, 2.42, .910), who backstopped MSU to its first-ever Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles last year.
