Maryville Tops Princeton in Exhibition

NCAA Division I men's hockey newcomer Maryville recorded an exhibition victory at Princeton on Saturday at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink in the first-ever meeting between the visiting Saints and the host Tigers.

After Seamus Latta staked Princeton to a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal eight minutes into the first period, independent Maryville responded with goals just over two minutes apart from Adam Cavallin (power play) and Anthony Hall to close out the scoring. Hall also assisted on Cavallin's game-tying goal. Princeton outshot, Maryville, 36-15, overall as Bruno Bruveris, a Rensselaer transfer, made 35 saves in all for the Saints, while Conor Callaghan led all three Princeton goalies on the night with nine saves.

As an exhibition, team and individual statistics will not count in either school's official totals, and the game result will also not be included in their overall records. The two teams also played a three-on-three overtime session, where neither scored, and then contested a shootout, where Princeton tallied two goals to Maryville's one.

Princeton Women Win in OT to Sweep UConn

Chloe Brinson's power-play goal just over three minutes into overtime proved to be her first career goal for seventh-ranked Princeton University. It also enabled the Tigers to complete their comeback from a late three-goal deficit to edge visiting No. 8 UConn, 6-5, on Saturday at Hobey Baker Rink, and complete a two-step sweep in NCAA women's hockey non-conference play.

Down 4-2 at the start of the third period, Princeton then fell behind by three goals midway through the final frame on a power-play tally by UConn's Maya Serdachny, her second goal of the game, before the Tigers began their comeback. Hannah Fetterolf made it 5-3 with less than seven minutes left, before Riley Sorokan and Caroline Averill tallied extra-attacker goals less than two minutes apart, the second with just 51 seconds remaining in regulation. Brinson then connected in the extra session 63 seconds after the Tigers went on the power play, after Huskies captain Livvy Dewar had been sent off for holding, to end it, seven months after UConn had eliminated Princeton in the first round of the 2026 NCAA tournament. The Huskies had swept the Tigers a year ago up in Storrs, Conn., to open last season.

Lia Nevo finished with 25 saves in goal for Princeton (2-0-0 overall), which was outshot, 30-20, on the afternoon. Taylor Belchetz stopped 14 shots for UConn (2-4-0), which squandered 2-0 and 5-2 leads after falling, 2-1, in the series opener on Friday. The Tigers travel to Rensselaer and Union next weekend in ECAC Hockey conference play, while the Huskies will host Mercyhurst for a pair of non-conference contests.

Princeton Takes One Game Lead on Union

Jake Manfre scored two goals as Princeton University raced out to a four-goal lead en route to a 5-2 win over No. 20 Union College tonight at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers now lead the best-of three ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series, one game to none. It was Princeton's first home playoff game since 2018, and fifth consecutive home playoff victory dating back to 2017.

Despite being outshot, 31-24, overall and only winning 32 of 75 total faceoffs. Princeton nevertheless dominated a Union team that had shutout its opposition for over 66 minutes entering the game, and which had also been connecting at nearly 25 percent with a man advantage. The Tigers killed off all six Union power plays on the night, and also limited a Garnet Chargers team that had been averaging over five goals per game since Feb. 1 to just two late scores after the outcome was no longer in doubt.

"They're a tremendous team, with a ton of firepower," said Princeton head coach Ben Syer about Union. "I thought we did a really nice job tonight–but they force you to play honest, and I wasn't comfortable until the final buzzer."

Joshua Karnish opened the scoring for Princeton just over six minutes into the first period, his fourth goal of the season and fourth in as many games. Tyler Rubin and Manfre then scored four minutes apart in the second stanza to put the Tigers up by three, before Manfre notched his second goal of the night and 14th of the season just 23 seconds into the final frame. Princeton captain David Jacobs finished with a game-high two assists.

"It helps to get production from our depth, and they played well," said Syer.

Union's Ethan Benz and Parker Lindauer then sandwiched goals around an empty-net tally by Princeton's Jaxson Ezman over the final five minutes for the final margin.

Princeton goaltender Arthur Smith stopped 29 shots, earning his ninth win of the campaign and the 21st of his college career.

"He was solid, and we needed him to be solid," said Syer.

The Tigers also blocked 20 shots on the night, with Rubin recording a team-high four blocks.

"We all trust each other," said Smith. "We have lot of seniors on the back end, and when you trust each other to do the job, you do well."

Cameron Korpi had 14 saves on 18 shots for the Garnet Chargers before being relieved early in the third period by Brayden Gillespie (five saves). Union skaters blocked just eight shots in all.

Game Two is Saturday at Baker Rink at 7 p.m. A win would send the Tigers on to the ECAC Hockey semifinals in Lake Placid, while a Union victory would force a deciding Game Three on Sunday at 4 p.m.

"It's a long series, and tomorrow will be a grind," said Syer.

"I think we'll be ready," said Smith. "I don't think we'll carry the win into tomorrow, and we'll approach it the same way."

ADDENDUM: Manfre continued his scoring streak with another goal, Smith made 32 saves, and Kai Daniells notched a hat trick as Princeton ousted Union with a 5-2 triumph in Game Two. Princeton (17-12-3 overall) moves on to the ECAC semifinals against Cornell, while Union (22-12-3) saw its season come to end.

Princeton Edges Clarkson, 4-3

Princeton University extended its home winning streak this season to five games with a 4-3 triumph over conference rival Clarkson University last night at Hobey Baker Rink. Tigers junior forward Kai Daniells notched the game-winning goal in the third period, his second straight game-winner and sixth goal of the weekend, to complete Princeton's comeback from a two-goal first-period deficit.

"We've got to make our own breaks," said Princeton head coach Ben Syer afterwards, "to compete and believe in ourselves and do it together."

Owen van Steensel (power-play) and Luke Pakulak scored 48 seconds apart to open the scoring for Clarkson midway through the opening period. Luc Pelletier then scored on a breakaway midway through the second stanza for the Tigers, shortly after he burst out of the penalty box after serving two minutes for tripping.

"That goal gave us a little bit of life, hope, whatever you want to call it," said Syer.

Kevin Anderson tied the contest early in the final frame, before Julian Fachinelli gave Princeton its first lead just under four minutes later.

"We knew if we stuck to our game, we were too good not to break through," said Daniells post-game. "When we stick to our structure and play our game, we're as good as anyone in the conference."

Daniells then made it 4-2 with less than three minutes left, wristing a shot home from the high slot after skating right to left.

"He has skill," said Syer of Daniells. "When he plays hard, he's a different player, and he earned his goals this weekend. He didn't cheat the game, and he set the tone for the entire team."

Remi Gelinas tallied an extra attacker goal in the final minute to pull Clarkson within one, but Daniells won a faceoff with 1.6 seconds left in Princeton's defensive zone to seal the victory.

"I'm proud of them," said Syer about his team. "They competed and didn't quit. They stayed with it."

Conor Callaghan made 23 saves for the Tigers, and also added an assist on Pelletier's goal.

"He was good," said Syer of Callaghan, who has started the last five games in net for the Tigers. "He made some timely saves, and he was real good for us."

"It's going to be exciting, " said Daniels, who added that he has friends on this year's Bowling Green squad. "It's some school time off, to get out and play some hockey."
