Third Day of 2025 NCAA Men's Regionals Done

The third day of the 2025 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey regionals are complete, and two spots have been secured for the NCAA Frozen Four in St. Louis in two weeks' time.

At the Toledo, Ohio regional, Quinn Hutson's overtime goal propelled Boston University to a 3-2 win over Cornell. The Terriers (23-13-2 overall) are now headed to their third consecutive Frozen Four, and 25th all-time. The loss by the Big Red (19-11-6) also ended the career of longtime Cornell head coach Mike Schafer, who finishes with an overall record of 561-300-117.

At the Fargo, N.D. regional, Western Michigan outlasted Massachusetts, 2-1, on an early third-period power-play goal by Tim Washe, and 28 saves overall from Hampton Slukynsky. The Broncos (32-7-1) are now headed to the first Frozen Four in program history, while UMass (21-14-5) was seeking its first Frozen Four since the Minutemen won their first-ever national championship in 2021.

The last two regionals conclude on Sunday, with UConn facing Penn State in Allentown, Pa., and Boston College taking on Denver in Manchester, N.H. 

First Day of 2025 NCAA Tournament Finished

The 2025 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey championship got underway on Thursday in Toledo, Ohio and Fargo, N.D.

In the tournament opener in Toledo, Boston University broke a three-all tie with five third-period goals, as the Terriers topped Ohio State, 8-3. Cole Hutson scored one goal and set up three others for the Terriers, who advanced to the regional final at the Huntington Center against Ivy League opponent Cornell. The Big Red ousted Big Ten champion Michigan State, 4-3, on a power-play goal by Sullivan Mack with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, and will now face BU on Saturday. 

In Fargo, Western Michigan outlasted Minnesota State, 2-1, in double overtime on a goal by Grant Slukinsky to make their regional final. In the nightcap at SCHEELS Arena, Aydar Suniev's second goal of the game less than five minutes into OT lifted UMass to a 5-4 comeback win over Minnesota and a spot in Saturday's Fargo final.

The Manchester, N.H. and Allentown, Pa. regionals get underway today.

 

2025 NCAA Men's D-I Hockey Tournament Set

The field is set for the 2025 NCAA Division Men's Ice Hockey championship, which begins this Thursday.

As has been the case since 2003, 16 teams are grouped into four regionals of four schools each, beginning with two regional semifinal games (1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3), and then the semifinal winners meeting two days later in the regional final contests. The top four seeds overall in order are Boston College, Michigan State, Western Michigan and Maine.

Denver is the defending NCAA champion, while Bentley and UConn are in both the championship for the first time ever.

The four regional champions will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals in St. Louis on April 10. The national championship game will be contested on April 12.

BU, Minnesota Punch Tickets to 2023 Men's Frozen Four

Two spots in the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Frozen Four have been filled.

Boston University edged Cornell, 2-1, today in the Manchester (N.H.) Regional final at SNHU Arena. Ethan Phillips' goal in the third period, his second score of the regional after a two-goal regular season, stood up as the game-winner as the Terriers advanced to the Frozen Four for the first time since 2015. Wilmer Skoog also scored for BU (29-10-0 overall), which has now won nine straight games. Ian Shane made 19 saves for Cornell in defeat, as the Big Red finished the season at 21-11-2.

Top-ranked Minnesota ousted in-state rival St. Cloud State, 4-1, tonight in the Fargo (N.D.) Regional final at Scheels Arena. Logan Cooley, Jackson LaCombe and Jaxon Nelson each posted a goal and assist for the victorious Golden Gophers (28-9-1), who are headed back to the national semifinals for the second straight season. SCSU goaltender Jaxon Castor made 26 stops for the Huskies (25-13-3). 

The last two places in the Frozen Four will be filled in after Sunday's contests. Ohio State faces Quinnipiac in the Bridgeport (Conn.) Regional final at 2 p.m. ET, while host Penn State will battle Big Ten rival Michigan in the Allentown (Pa.) regional final at 6:30 p.m. ET Both contests will be televised live on ESPN2.

Day One of 2023 NCAA Men's Regionals Done

The first day of the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Regionals is in the books, and the biggest takeaway after the opening four games is that there will be a new national champion this season.

Cornell goaltender Ian Shane stopped all 27 shots he faced, and Jack O' Leary had a goal and an assist as the Big Red ousted defending NCAA champion Denver in Manchester, N.H. In the earlier game at SNHU Arena, Boston University upended Western Michigan, 5-1, behind a goal and two assists from Ethan Phillips. Cornell and the Terriers will face off in the regional final on Saturday.

St. Cloud State blanked last year's national runner-up, Minnesota State, by a 4-0 count in the matinee game in Fargo, N.D. Grant Cruikshank and Veeti Miettinen each scored a goal and set up another for the Huskies, who also got 34 stops from Jaxon Castor. In the nightcap at Scheels Arena, No. 1 overall seed Minnesota overcame an early one-goal deficit with eight unanswered scores in a 9-2 rout of Canisius. Bryce Brodzinski tallied three goals and an assist for the Golden Gophers, who will now meet SCSU on Saturday to determine who will head to the NCAA Frozen Four in Tampa next month.

The Allentown (Colgate-Michigan-Michigan Tech-Penn State) and Bridgeport (Harvard-Ohio State-Merrimack-Quinnipiac) regionals get underway on Saturday.

The regional semifinal winners from the first day of competition will meet in the regional final at each site two days later. 

The four regional winners will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals in Tampa on April 6 (5 p.m./8:30 p.m. ESPN 2), with the Fargo winner facing the Manchester winner, and the Allentown victor facing the Bridgeport victor. The semifinal winners will then meet on April 8 (8 p.m. ESPN2) for the national title.

Michigan's Mann Turns Pro

The University of Michigan is on the lookout for a new starting goaltender, as Strauss Mann has decided to pass up his senior season to turn professional.

Mann, 22, an undrafted netminder from Greenwich, Conn., played in 77 games over the last three years at Michigan, in which he finished with a 35-30-9 record to go with a 2.14 goals-against average and 11 shutouts.

As a sophomore in 2019-20, the six-foot-tall Mann went 18-13-4 with a 1.85 GAA and six shutouts to earn Big Ten Best Goaltender and Big Ten First All-Star Team accolades, before the 2019-20 campaign was canceled by COVID-19. As a team captain this season, he helped the Wolverines to the NCAA tournament by winning 11 games, before Michigan was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to the coronavirus.

Prior to arriving at Ann Arbor in the fall of 2018, Mann played one year for Fargo (USHL), where he went 22-8-3 with five shutouts and also backstopped the Force to the Clark Cup championship.

2021 NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Regionals - Day One

 

The first day of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Championship is in the books, with the first day of regional competition completed.

Bridgeport, CT Regional

Bemidji State 6, Wisconsin 3

The fourth-seeded Beavers jumped to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes and then made it 4-1 after 40 minutes en route to eliminating the Badgers, who got two goals from Cole Caufield. Brendan Harris led Bemidji with a goal and two assists, while Zach Driscoll made 30 saves. 

Massachusetts 5, Lake Superior State 1

The Minutemen spoiled Lake Superior's first NCAA tournament appearance in 25 years by breaking a 1 1-1 first period tie with four unanswered goals. Jake Gaudet scored twice and Oliver Chau set up two goals for UMass, which got 20 stops from Filip Lindberg. 

Fargo, ND Regional

North Dakota 5, American International 1

The Fighting Hawks raced out to a 4-0 advantage in advancing to the regional final. Collin Adams and Jasper Weatherby scored two goals apiece for UND, while Adam Scheel stopped 18 AIC shots.  

Minnesota-Duluth over Michigan

No contest, Michigan ruled out of tournament due to positive COVID-19 tests.

Worcester has hosted more Division I men's hockey regionals so far (15) than any other NCAA site, while Webster Bank Arena is back in the mix for the first time since 2017, and SNHU and Scheels arenas will both be utilized for the second time in three seasons.

The NCAA Frozen Four will be held for the first time ever at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit in April 2020, while the national semifinals and championship contest will return to PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh the following April, for the first time since 2013.

BU, Harvard, Air Force, UMD Advance in NCAA Hockey Regionals

The first day of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Championship is in the books—and will be tough to top the rest of the tournament.

At the West Regional in Fargo, Boston University edged de facto host and defending national champion North Dakota, 4-3, in double overtime after an apparent UND goal in the first extra session was disallowed, due to an offside play on Ludvig Hoff. The Fighting Hawks had fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period with goals just three minutes apart by Hoff and Christian Wolanin to force sudden death, and outshot BU by a 59-29 margin on the afternoon. Charlie McAvoy connected for the game-winner 11:48 into the second OT off a cross-ice feed from Clayton Keller for BU, while goaltender Jake Oettinger finished with 56 saves for the Terriers.

In the nightcap in North Dakota, top-seeded Minnesota-Duluth took a 2-0 lead on Ohio State, which had a supposed goal of its own called back in the opening 20 minutes. The Buckeyes responded with two third-period goals by defensemen Matt Joyaux and Gordi Myer to tie matters, but it was NCHC champion UMD winning in sudden death on a slapshot by blueliner Willie Raskob at 11:58 of the additional session. Hunter Miksa made 40 saves for the Bulldogs, who will now face BU at 6 p.m. ET (ESPNU) on Saturday at Scheels Arena in the West Regional final.

At the East Regional in Providence, ECAC champion and top-seeded Harvard won its first NCAA Tournament game in 23 years, getting two goals from Tyler Moy and 41 saves from Merrick Madsen in topping Providence, 3-0. The Crimson also won its 15th straight game dating back to January.

In the second game, Atlantic Hockey champion Air Force outlasted Western Michigan, 5-4, with Kyle Haak scoring twice and Shane Starrett stopping 22 shots for the Falcons, who led by a 4-1 score early in the third period. Griffen Molino and Sheldon Dries scored 23 seconds apart to pull the Broncos within one, but Tyler Ledford’s goal just over a minute-and-a-half later stood up as the game-winner for AFA. The Falcons will now meet the Crimson on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. (ESPNU) at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in the East Regional final.

The Northeast Regional at SNHU Arena in Manchester, N.H. gets underway with Cornell encountering UMass Lowell at noon ET (ESPN3.com) on Saturday, capped by Minnesota skating against Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU). The Midwest Regional at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati faces off with Denver meeting Michigan Tech at 1 p.m. ET (ESPNews), followed by Union (NY) taking on Penn State at 4:30 p.m. ET (ESPN3.com).

The Northeast and Midwest regional finals will be contested on Sunday, at 3:30 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. ET, respectively, both showing on ESPNU. The four regional winners will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four on April 6 at the United Center in Chicago.

Schools not qualifying this year that advanced to the 2016 NCAA Tournament include Boston College, Ferris State, Michigan, Northeastern, Quinnipiac, RIT, St. Cloud State and Yale.

Denver is the top seed overall in this year's tournament, while Penn State is appearing in its first-ever NCAA Tournament. North Dakota is the defending national champion, having won its eighth NCAA title overall last year.

The East and West regionals will be held on Friday and Saturday, with the Midwest and Northeast regionals to be contested on Saturday and Sunday. The four regional champions will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four in Chicago on April 6.

NCAA Regionals Underway; Divison III Final Set

The first four games of the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Championship are in the books. 

 

The Northeast Regional in Manchester, N.H. began today with top-seeded Boston University edging Yale, 3-2, on overtime, to set up a Saturday final with No. 2 seed Minnesota-Duluth, which topped Minnesota, 4-1. 

 

The West Regional in Fargo, N.D. got underway Friday with St. Cloud State outlasting second-seeded Michigan Tech, 3-2, in overtime before No. 1 seed North Dakota upended Quinnipiac, 4-1.

 

The East Regional in Providence begins on Saturday, with Providence-Miami and Boston College-Denver, while the Midwest Regional in South Bend, Ind. opens tomorrow with Minnesota State-RIT and Harvard-Omaha. Those regional finals are scheduled for Sunday.

 

At the NCAA Division III men’s semifinals in Minneapolis, Wisconsin Stevens-Point routed Amherst, 6-2, while Trinity overcame Adrian, 5-3. The national final is set for Saturday night at Ridder Arena.
