McGroarty opened the scoring on Sunday, wristing a shot from the right circle into the far side of the Princeton net just over three minutes into the second period. David Ma responded for Princeton on a power play just under two minutes later, before Quinnipiac's Alex Power put the Bobcats ahead for good less than 90 seconds later off a deflection in front for his first goal of the season.

UConn Wins Connecticut Ice Again

Jake Percival knocked home a rebound with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, and the University of Connecticut won its second straight Connecticut Ice title with a 4-2 win tonight over Quinnipiac in New Haven. It also marked the first meeting between the two schools since UConn defeated Quinnipiac in the 2025 NCAA Allentown Regional final back in March in Allentown, Pa.

UConn (15-7-3 overall), which defeated host Yale in the opening round on Friday, rebounded from a 2-1 deficit after 40 minutes with three third-period goals, capped by Joey Muldowney's empty-netter with less than two minutes left. Tabor Heaslip and Carlin Dezainde also scored for the 13th-ranked Huskies, who got 28 saves in net from Tyler Muszelik. Markus Vidicek and Chris Pelosi scored for the No. 6 Bobcats (19-5-2), which routed Sacred Heart last night. Both Quinnipiac goals tonight came in the second period, while Matej Marinov stopped 25 shots in goal.

Yale Defeats Quinnipiac in Home Opener

Yale University broke a seven-year, 17-game losing streak to its local rival last night, with a 4-2 win over  No. 5 Quinnipiac at venerable Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn. The Bulldogs rebounded from a two-goal deficit with four unanswered goals, including the game-winner from captain David Chen with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, to claim their 2025-26 home opener. It was also the ECAC Hockey conference opener for both schools.

After Antonin Verreault  and Charlie Leddy staked the visiting Bobcats to a 2-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest, David Andreychuk got the Bulldogs on the board just over three minutes later with his first career collegiate goal. Yale then tied the contest at two apiece on James Shannon's first-ever NCAA goal late in the second stanza.

Chen stole the puck deep in the Quinnipiac zone and scored on a backhand in tight to put Yale up, 3-2, for the first time late in the final frame, before Ronan O'Donnell closed out the scoring on an empty-net tally in the final minute of play. Noah Pak made 25 saves for the Bulldogs (1-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 ECACH) in victory, while Dylan Silverstein had 19 stops for the Bobcats (5-3-2-) in defeat. Quinnipiac outshot Yale, 27-23, and also won 37 out of 56 faceoffs, while the two teams combined to go 0-for-8 on the power play.

The win was Yale's first over Quinnipiac since a 3-2 triumph on Feb. 9, 2018, also at Ingalls Rink. Last night's victory was also the first ever for first-year Yale head coach Joe Howe.

Bennett, who led Union College to the 2014 NCAA championship, the first in school history, compiled a 195-134-45 record in nine-plus seasons in charge of the Dutchmen, including six seasons of 20 or more wins, before resigning in early 2022. Princeton Tabs Syer as New Men's Hockey Coach

Long-time ECAC Hockey assistant/associate head coach Ben Syer has been named the new head coach of the Princeton University men's ice hockey team. He becomes the 18th head coach in the history of the program, and succeeds Ron Fogarty, who helmed the Tigers over last 10 years.

A graduate of Western Ontario, Syer spent the last 12 years as an associate head coach at Cornell University, following one year as an assistant. He helped the Big Red to an ECAC Hockey tournament championship last year, its first Whitelaw Cup since 2010, while mentoring a defense that allowed a nation-low 1.86 goals per game. He also helped Cornell to seven NCAA tournament appearances, seven Ivy League crowns, and three ECAC Hockey regular-season titles in his 13 years in Ithaca, and posted a 13-6-4 record overall while serving as interim head coach on several occasions.

Prior to coaching at Cornell, Syer served nine seasons as an assistant coach at Quinnipiac University, the last two as associate head coach. In his tenure he helped the Bobcats in their move from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference/Atlantic Hockey to ECAC Hockey, and from the community-based Northford Ice Pavilion to the on-campus M&T Bank Arena. Quinnipiac won 151 games in all in his time in Hamden, while also posting a winning record each season and garnering two conference regular-season titles and one NCAA tournament berth.

A native of Kitchener, Ontario, Syer, 49, began his college coaching career at Ohio University (ACHA) while earning his master's degree. A first-time college head coach, he takes over a Tigers' team that finished 10-16-4 overall last season, and last qualified for the NCAAs in 2018.

Three Frozen Four Goalies Sign Pro Deals

Three of this year's NCAA Frozen Four starting goaltenders will not return to college hockey next season. Yaniv Perets (Quinnipiac), Erik Portillo (Michigan) and Drew Commesso (Boston University) all recently signed professional contracts, foregoing their remaining NCAA eligibility.

Perets, 23, a sophomore who backstopped Quinnipiac to its first-ever national title with a 3-2 overtime win over Minnesota on April 8, signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. A pro free agent from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., he led all NCAA Division I men's netminders with a 34-4-3 record in 41 games and a 1.49 goals-against average this season. He also tied for the national lead with 10 shutouts, and tied for second overall with a .931 save percentage. In two-plus seasons with the Bobcats, he finished 56-9-5 with 21 shutouts over 74 games.

Portillo, 22, a senior from Göteborg, Sweden, signed with the Los Angeles Kings, who had earlier acquired his rights from the Buffalo Sabres (2019 NHL Draft, 67th overall). He went 25-11-2 with a 3.00 GAA and .908 save percentage this year, in backstopping the Wolverines to their second consecutive Big Ten tournament title and Frozen Four semifinal appearance. In 87 career contests with Michigan, he posted a record of 60-22-3 with three shutouts.

Commesso, 22, a senior from Norwell, Mass., signed with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him 46th overall in 2020. He led BU to both the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles along with the Frozen Four this season, going 24-8-0 with a 2.46 GAA and .913 save percentage with two shutouts in 34 outings. In three seasons with the Terriers, he finished 43-22-4 with three shutouts in 73 contests.

The NCAA exodus continued this week among skaters, with sophomore forward Mackie Samoskevich (Michigan) signing with the Florida Panthers, who drafted him 24th overall in 2021. Samoskevich, 20, from Sandy Hook, Conn. was third on the Wolverines' scoring scroll this season with 20 goals and 23 assists for 43 points in 39 games, and completed his college career with 30-42—72 points in 79 contests.

Also signing with Florida was Mike Benning (Denver), a junior defenseman from St. Albert, Alberta, who recorded 31-52—83 points in 101 career games over three college campaigns. Drafted 95th overall by the Panthers in 2020, Benning, 20, notched 13-21—34 points in 39 games this year for the Pioneers, after helping DU win the 2022 national title by scoring the decisive goal in the NCAA championship game.
