Dekeyser, Detroit Blank Devils

Andrew Hammond (Bowling Green) allowed just one goal on Sunday. Unfortunately, his New Jersey Devils teammates couldn't score any for him.

The visiting Detroit Red Wings made a first-period goal stand up, and then added two empty-net tallies in the final three minutes of regulation, for a 3-0 victory in an NHL contest on Sunday afternoon at the Prudential Center in Newark. Both teams also had a goal disallowed during the game, the Devils for an offside play in the second period, and the Red Wings for goalie interference in the final frame.

Hammond, who backstopped BGSU from 2009 to 2013, finished with 21 saves for the Devils, who have now lost three consecutive games and five of their last six outings, including shootouts. New Jersey also tied a club record with just 17 shots on goal in the loss.

Danny Dekeyser (Western Michigan) recorded an assist for the Red Wings, who snapped a two-game losing skid with the win. He would have also drawn an assist on the disallowed Detroit goal.

The two teams will meet again in New Jersey on Friday night to close out the 2021-22 NHL regular season. Both clubs have been eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention.

Brown Claims First Liberty Hockey Invitational

The inaugural Liberty Hockey Invitational in Newark, N.J. went to the Brown University Bears. The tournament, which was played on Oct. 25-26 at the Prudential Center, home of the NHL's New Jersey Devils, featured an all-ECAC field its first time out, including Brown, Dartmouth, host Princeton and defending NCAA champion Yale.

Brown bested Yale, 4-1, on Friday as Mark Naclerio notched two goals and an assist, while Princeton edged Dartmouth, 3-2 in overtime on Tucker Brockett's first career goal for the Tigers. On Saturday, Brown closed out matters by beating Dartmouth, 5-3, with Naclerio netting the game-winning goal and also setting up two other scores. Yale nipped Princeton, 3-2, as Nicholas Weberg scored twice, including the game-winner shorthanded  midway through regulation.

Naclerio and Brockett were both named to the All-Tournament Team, along with forward Stu Wilson (Yale), defensemen Brandon Pfeil (Brown) and Brett Patterson (Dartmouth), and goalie Sean Bonar (Princeton), according to goprincetontigers.com.

Despite published crowds of less than 2,000 per game, according to USCHO.com box scores, the Invitational is slated to return to Newark next fall.

Global Hockey Legends Shoot and Score for Sandy Relief

It was one of the greatest assemblages ever of superstar hockey talent in the tri-state area— and it was all for charity.

More than 6,000 fans took up most of the lower level of the Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils, in Newark, N.J. on Saturday afternoon, and more than $50,000 was raised to benefit last year's southern New Jersey victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The North American Hockey Legends, a team of former Devils and other former local NHL alumni, faced off with such Russian Hockey Legends as Darius Kasparaitis, Alexei Kasatonov, Vladimir Malakhov, Alexei Yashin and Valeri Kamensky, along with Kontinental Hockey League president Alexander Medvedev. The Russians held on for a 7-6 victory, after North America roared back from a 6-2 third-period deficit.

The game was organized by former longtime Devils defenseman and current TV analyst Ken Daneyko, who put things together in just a matter of weeks.

Clemmensen to Start Game Four for Florida

Former New Jersey Devils goaltender Scott Clemmensen will get the opportunity to improve upon his perfect 5-0 record against his old NHL club when he starts Game Four tonight for the Florida Panthers at his old home of the Prudential Center.

"I'll be ready. Thirty-four years old and (making) my first start in the playoffs," Clemmensen said to The Star-Ledger. "I've felt very much a part of this team all year long. I've played pretty much regularly all year long."

The Iowa native and Boston College product will be making his first career Stanley Cup postseason start after backstopping Florida to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in Game 3 on Tuesday night in Newark to put the Panthers up two games to one in the first-round series.

He relieved Jose Theodore just over six minutes into the contest, with the host Devils up by a 3-0 count. Clemmensen then shut the door and stopped all 19 shots he faced, while his teammates scored three power-play goals, en route to the goaltender's first-ever NHL playoff win.
