U.S. Falls in 2024 IIHF Worlds Opener

The United States got behind the proverbial eight-ball on its first day of competition at the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Czechia on Friday. The U.S. fell to Sweden by a 5-2 count at Ostrava Arena in the opener of Group B play for both teams.

Zach Werenski (Michigan) and Brock Nelson (North Dakota) scored goals for the Americans, who got 33 saves in net from Alex Lyon (Yale). Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) and Matt Boldy (Boston College) picked up assists for the U.S., which will return to action today against Germany, while Sweden will face Poland on Sunday. 

Canada, which boasts almost a half-dozen former NCAA skaters on its roster, begins play today against Great Britain in Group A round-robin competition. The Canadians won last year's Worlds in Riga/Latvia, with Germany claiming the silver medal and co-host Latvia earning bronze. The U.S. finished fourth in 2023.

ADDENDUM: The U.S. rebounded for a 6-1 win over Germany, getting goals from six different scorers. Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) and Michael Kesselring (Northeastern) tallied a goal and an assist apiece for the Americans, who also got two assists each from Cole Caufield (Wisconsin) and Shane Pinto (North Dakota). Trey Augustine (Michigan State) made 12 saves on 13 shots in relief of Lyon (14 saves).

BC's Gaudreau Leaves Calgary for Columbus

The NHL free agency period has begun—and the Columbus Blue Jackets have already landed the largest prize.

After eight full seasons with the Calgary Flames, who drafted him 104th overall in 2011, left wing Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) has left Alberta for Ohio, after signing a seven-year, $68.2 million deal with the Blue Jackets.

Gaudreau, 28, who turned pro in 2014 after three years at BC, has tallied 210 goals and 399 assists for 609 points in 602 NHL regular-season appearances, all with Calgary. He notched 40-75—l15 points in 82 outings in 2021-22, setting new career highs in each category as he finished second in the league in total points, and in addition led all NHL players with a plus-64 plus-minus rating. He has also recorded 11-22—33 points in 42 Stanley Cup Playoff contests, including 3-11—l4 points in 12 games this spring in leading the Flames to the second round. The 2016 Lady Byng Trophy winner as the NHL's most gentlemanly player that season, he also scored the overtime winner in Game 7 against the Dallas Stars in the first round this year, Calgary's first true playoff series win since 2015.

Gaudreau, from Salem, N.J., joined BC after registering 36 goals and 71 points in 60 games with Dubuque (USHL) in 2010-11. Originally committed to Northeastern University, he switched to BC and registered 78-97—l75 points in three seasons with the Eagles, and won a national championship with them as a freshman in 2012. He recorded 36-44—80 points as a junior in 2013-14, winning the Hobey Baker Memorial Award that season as the NCAA's top player while also helping BC to the Frozen Four in Philadelphia before turning pro shortly afterwards with Calgary.

Gaudreau has also suited up for the United States in several international competitions, helping the U.S. to the gold medal at the 2013 World Junior Championship, and to bronze at the 2018 IIHF World Championship. He also won silver at the 2012 Under-18 Championship.

Gaudreau Lifts Flames over Oettinger, Stars in OT

In the end, it was Boston College beating Boston University.

Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) sent the Calgary Flames to the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs when his shot from a sharp angle beat Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger (Boston University) just over 15 minutes into overtime in Game 7 on Sunday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The goal gave the Flames a 3-2 win in the contest, and a four games-to-three victory in the series.

Gaudreau, 28, who also set up the tying goal for Calgary in regulation, finished with two goals and six assists for eight points in the series. Oettinger, 23, made 60 saves in the seventh-game defeat, and finished with 272 saves on 285 shots against in the series, while also notching one shutout.

Gaudreau helped BC to the 2012 NCAA title as a freshman, and then won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award two years later with the Eagles as the top player in men's Division I college hockey. Oettinger won 58 games over three seasons (2017-2019) at BU, and also helped the Terriers to two NCAA tournament berths.

Calgary will now take on the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL's first postseason "Battle of Alberta" since 1991.

Former NCAA Players Shine in NHL

 

Former NCAA players continued to shine in the early part of the 2021-22 NHL season.

Brock Nelson (North Dakota) scored the first two goals ever by a New York Islanders player in their new home of UBS Arena, but the home team fell to the Calgary Flames by a 5-2 count on Saturday night. Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) had a goal and an assist for the visitors. 

Earlier that day, Jimmy Vesey (Harvard) registered the game-tying goal in the third period as the New Jersey Devils overcame the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 5-3 triumph in Florida. The loss snapped a nine-game points streak by the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning.

Zach Whitecloud (Bemidji State) returned to the Vegas lineup with two goals in the Golden Knights' 5-2 victory over Detroit on Nov. 18. That same evening, Spencer Knight (Boston College) made a career-high 45 saves to lift the Florida Panthers to a 4-1 win over New Jersey, while Troy Terry (Denver) extended his personal point streak to 16 games (12g, 10a) with a goal as his Anaheim Ducks fell to the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1. 

Kevin Hayes (Boston College) notched the game-tying goal and Cam Atkinson (Boston College) won it in overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers edged the Calgary Flames, 2-1, on Nov. 16. Lastly, Rem Pitlick (Minnesota) notched his first career NHL hat trick as the Minnesota Wild upended the Seattle Kraken, 4-2, on Nov. 13.

Gaudreau Gets Three as Flames Down Jets

It was Hockey East night in Winnipeg on Thursday. Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) scored three goals, and Mark Jankowski (Providence) added another as the Calgary Flames topped the host
Jets, 4-1, in NHL action.

Gaudreau's three goals came on just four shots on goal. He now has nine goals and 18 points in his last 13 games against Winnipeg, including two hat tricks. Connor Hellebuyck (UMass Lowell) made 25 stops on 28 shots against for the Jets, who fell to 24-11-2 overall.

Calgary improved to 23-12-3, and is now one point behind Winnipeg for the top spot in the NHL's Western Conference.

U.S. Wins First Two at World Championship

The United States is off to a good start at the 2018 IIHF World Championship in Denmark, winning its first two games in Group “B” round-robin play.

The Americans opened the tournament on Friday by besting rival Canada, 5-4, in a shootout. Cam Atkinson (Boston College) of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets scored twice in the extra session, including the deciding shootout goal.

Dylan Larkin (Michigan) of the Detroit Red Wings recorded two goals in regulation for the U.S. against the Canadians, with Chris Kreider (Boston College) of the New York Rangers setting up both of Larkin’s tallies. Anders Lee (Notre Dame) of the New York Islanders and Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) of the Calgary Flames also scored for Team USA in regulation. Keith Kinkaid (Union) of the New Jersey Devils stopped 40 shots in net, and then made five saves on six shootout attempts for the win. Colton Parayko (Alaska Fairbanks) of the St. Louis Blues scored for Canada in regulation.

The U.S. then blanked host Denmark, 4-0, on Saturday. Will Butcher (Denver) of the New Jersey Devils collected the game-winning goal in the first period, before Kreider and Atkinson connected in the second stanza. Nick Jensen (St. Cloud State) of the Detroit Red Wings then closed out the scoring in the third period, and also joined Kreider and Gaudreau in recording an assist on the day. Kinkaid finished with 20 stops for the shutout.

Team USA will face Germany on Monday in its next outing, before taking on Latvia on May 10 and Korea on May 11.

NCAA Skaters Shine in 2018 NHL Skills Competition

Several former NCAA skaters shined on Saturday night at the 2018 GEICO NHL All-Star Skills Competition, part of the 2018 NHL All-Star Weekend at Amalie Arena in Tampa.

Brock Boeser (North Dakota) of the Vancouver Canucks finished first overall in the Honda NHL Accuracy Shooting event. Boeser, who helped UND to a national title in 2016, hit all five light-up targets in a time of 11.136 seconds. Finishing second was Brian Boyle (Boston College) of the New Jersey Devils, who clocked in at 11.626 seconds.

Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) of the Calgary Flames won the Gatorade NHL Puck Control Relay in a time of 24.650 seconds. Gaudreau, the 2014 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner with BC, stickhandled a puck through two separate obstacle courses, one a straight line of pucks and the other a slalom of bottles, before shooting his puck successively through the light-up rungs of three separate open gate mechanisms.

Jack Eichel (Boston University) of the Buffalo Sabres finished third in the Enterprise NHL Fastest Skater competition with a time of 13.828 seconds. Zach Werenski (Michigan) of the Columbus Bluejackets was sixth in 14.250 seconds, while Noah Hanifin (Boston College) of the Carolina Hurricanes was seventh at 14.317 seconds.

Connor Hellebuyck (UMass Lowell) of the Winnipeg Jets stopped six of 10 shots in the GEICO NHL Save Streak goaltending competition, and made three saves in a row at one point.

The NHL All-Star games begin on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET (NBC TV).

ADDENDUM: Boeser became the first rookie in 33 years to earn NHL All-Star Game honors, tallying two goals and an assist in two games as his Pacific Division won this year's 3-on-3 game competition with wins over the Central and Atlantic divisions.

Gaudreau Powers U.S. to Win Over Sweden

Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) of the NHL's Calgary Flames scored two goals and was named the American player of the game as the U.S. Men's National Team edged Sweden, 4-3, before a crowd of 18,398 in a preliminary-round contest at the 2017 IIHF World Championship in Cologne, Germany.

J.T. Compher (Michigan) of the Colorado Avalanche tallied the game-winning goal in the third period for the U.S., which outshot Sweden by a 39-23 margin and rebounded from three one-goal deficits. Jack Eichel (Boston University) of the Buffalo Sabres registered two assists while Clayton Keller (Boston University) scored the other U.S. goal, and Jimmy Howard (Maine) of the Detroit Red Wings made 20 saves for the Americans.

The win improved Team USA's record in the annual tournament to 2-1-0, including an earlier 2-1 loss to Germany followed by a 7-2 win over Denmark. The U.S. will next face Italy on Wednesday at Lanxess Arena.

Gaudreau, Other Collegians Come Through for Calgary in Game 3

Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) scored from the right circle with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, and Mikael Backlund wristed home the game-winner in overtime as the Calgary Flames stayed alive in the Stanley Cup Playoffs by defeating the Anaheim Ducks, 4-3, in Game 3 of their NHL Western Conference quarterfinal series on Tuesday night in Calgary.

The Flames, who had been outscored, 9-1, in dropping the first two games in California, had a tying third-period goal by Sam Bennett disallowed after video replays proved inconclusive. Gaudreau then tied the game on a 5-on-3 situation, after the Ducks had been penalized for delay of game and Calgary goaltender Karri Ramo had also been lifted for an extra attacker following coincidental minors on both teams.

Brandon Bollig (St. Lawrence) opened the scoring in the first period, assisted by Mason Raymond (Minnesota-Duluth). Joe Colborne (Denver) scored a second-period shorthanded goal for the Flames, who will attempt to knot the series at two wins apiece in Game 4 on Friday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Hobey Baker Award Top 10 Announced

The 10 preliminary finalists for the 2014-15 Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in NCAA Division I men's college hockey were released today. Per USCHO.com, here they are in alphabetical order:

The Hobey Hat Trick concerning the three finalists will be announced on April 2, with the winner to ultimately be crowned in Boston on April 10, one day before the national championship game at TD Garden.

Eichel, the nation's leading scorer for most of the 2014-15 campaign and a projected top pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, is considered the favorite. Last year's winner, Johnny Gaudreau of Boston College, collected both the Hobey Baker Award and the national scoring title before moving on to the Calgary Flames.

BC, BU Win at Beanpot

Ryan Fitzgerald's goal 76 seconds into overtime lifted ninth-ranked Boston College to a 3-2 victory over No. 16 Harvard in the Beanpot Tournament consolation game at TD Garden on Monday evening.

BC, which avenged a 6-3 loss to the Crimson back in November, thus remains in the top 10 in the Pairwise Rankings, which are used to used to mimic the 16-team NCAA Tournament selection process, while Harvard dropped into a tie for the 17th spot.

Matthew Gaudreau tied the game for BC at 8:56 of the third period after Harvard had taken a 2-1 lead on goals by Alexander Kerfoot and Sean Malone less than three minutes apart midway through the second stanza, the latter on a power play. Alex Tuch scored the game-opening power play goal in the first period for the Eagles, who got 33 saves from Thatcher Demko.

In the championship contest, Boston University claimed its record 30th Beanpot crown on an overtime power-play tally by Matt Grzelcyk to top Northeastern, 4-3. The goal was Grzelcyk's second of the game, and came just 51 seconds into the extra session for the Terriers.

It was BU's first Beanpot title since 2009, while the Huskies still haven't won one since 1988.

Monday's games had been postponed from their original date of Feb. 9 due to repeated snow that has blanketed Boston area in recent weeks. Northeastern edged BC, 3-2, in the first round on Feb. 2, while BU outlasted Harvard, 4-3, in overtime later that night.

Gaudreau Hat Trick Gets Flames First Win Since Dec. 4

Former Boston College sniper and 2014 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner Johnny Gaudreau put on quite a show last night in Hollywood.

Gaudreau's first career NHL hat trick, including two goals in the last three minutes of play, pulled his visiting Calgary Flames into a tie with the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings before the visitors won it in overtime, 4-3.

Gaudreau, 21, now has 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points in 36 games with Calgary this season. He got the Flames on the board late in the second period with a power-play tally, pulled them within one on a wraparound attempt with 2:12 remaining in regulation, and then tied the game on a deflected backhand shot with 59 seconds left as Calgary went on to snap an eight-game winless string (0-7-1) before breaking for Christmas.

Gaudreau made his NHL debut in the Flames' 2013-14 regular season finale, scoring a goal at Vancouver. A native of Carney's Point, N.J., he tallied 36 goals and 44 assists for 80 points with B.C. last winter, the third-highest single-season output in school history, in helping the Eagles to an NCAA Frozen Four berth.

He posted 78-97--175 points in three seasons at the Heights, while assisting B.C. to three Beanpot Tournament titles, two Hockey East regular-season crowns, and the 2012 NCAA national championship.

Was there ever really any doubt?

After months of speculation/anticipation, Johnny Gaudreau became the third Boston College Eagle ever to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in NCAA Division I hockey when his selection was announced today in Philadelphia. The junior forward from Carneys Point, N.J. joins David Emma (1991) and Mike Mottau (2000) in the pantheon of BC Hobey Baker Award winners.

Gaudreau, 20, who had a goal and two assists in Thursday’s 5-4 NCAA Frozen Four semifinal loss to Union College at the Wells Fargo Center, finished the season with a nation-leading 36 goals and 44 assists for 80 points in 40 games. The other Hobey Hat Trick finalists this year were senior forwards Greg Carey of St. Lawrence and Nic Dowd of St. Cloud State. Gaudreau was also a Hobey Hat Trick finalist a year ago, when the award when to St. Cloud State's Drew Leblanc.

Through three seasons with BC, the 5-foot-7, 150-pound Gaudreau compiled 78-98—176 points in 119 contests. He collected 21 power-play goals and 18 game-winners, and also scored a spectacular goal as a freshman two years ago to ice the Eagles’ 4-1 win over Ferris State in the 2012 NCAA championship game in Tampa, Fla.

Gaudreau won a host of other accolades this season, including the Walter Brown Award as the top American-born player in college hockey, and was also recently named a First Team All-America selection. He helped BC to three Beanpot Tournament championships, two Hockey East Association regular season championships, and a Hockey East tournament title to go along with a national title. A two-time Hockey East Player of the year, he also tied a league record this season when he fashioned a 31-game point streak.

Gaudreau became the first Eagle since Emma (81 points) in 1990-91 to record at least 80 points in a single season, and the third 80-point scorer in BC annals along with Craig Janney (83 points in 1986-87). “Johnny Hockey” also needed just 54 points next season to top Emma’s 239 career points and become BC’s all-time leading scorer.

Unfortunately, there won't be a next season for him in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

USCHO.com reported that besides winning the Hobey Baker Award today, Gaudreau also signed a three-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Calgary Flames, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2011 after he had helped Dubuque (USHL) to a Clark Cup crown.

According to the Calgary Flames web site, Gaudreau's two-way contract  will commence immediately with an annual NHL base salary of $832,500, a signing bonus of $92,500 each year, and an average annual value of $1.85 million including performance bonuses .

He will join BC linemate Bill Arnold, a senior forward who also played his last career college game against Union, and who just signed with Calgary. The pair will make their NHL debuts this Sunday in Vancouver as the Flames close out their 2013-14 campaign, with Gaudreau wearing No. 53 and Arnold No. 46.

As a fan, I'm disappointed to see Gaudreau pass up his senior year at BC, as he is a tremendously talented player. As an alumnus and a New Jersey native, I can say unequivocally that he did both the alma mater and the Garden state proud.

2014 Hobey Hat Trick Announced

Three forwards will vie for the 2014 Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey, with today’s announcement of the Hobey Hat Trick by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation at hobeybaker.com. The three skaters remaining out of the original pool of 10 finalists are Boston College’s Johnny Gaudreau, St. Lawrence University’s Greg Carey, and St. Cloud State University’s Nic Dowd.

The top scorer in the nation, Gaudreau has posted 35 goals and 42 assists for 77 points in 39 games. The Carney's Point, N.J. native had three goals and eight points in two wins at last weekend’s NCAA Northeast Regional in Worcester, Mass., and will now face Union College in a Frozen Four semifinal in Philadelphia on April 10. A fourth-round draft choice of the NHL’s Calgary Flames in 2011, he has put up 77-96—173 points in 118 total outings with the Eagles.

Carey, from Hamilton, Ont., concluded his college career with 18-39—57 points in 38 games with SLU, and set new personal season-highs in assists and points. Currently the third-leading scorer in the nation, he scored two goals in a 4-3 loss at Colgate on March 15 in an ECAC quarterfinal playoff match to finish his tenure with the Saints. He recently signed a pro contract with the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, after notching 84-101—185 points in 152 college contests.

Dowd, of Huntsville, Ala., scored the game-winning goal in overtime Saturday night as SCSU edged Notre Dame, 4-3, in the first round of the NCAA West Regional in St, Paul, Minn. He played his final college contest a night later in a 4-0 loss to Minnesota, and subsequently signed a free agent contract with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings. Dowd finished the campaign with 22-18—40 points in 38 appearances with the Huskies, establishing new personal season-highs in goals and points. He finished his SCSU career with 52-69—121 points in 155 games.

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award will be presented on April 11 in Philadelphia.

BC's Gaudreau Wins Walter Brown Award

Boston College junior forward Johnny Gaudreau was recently named the 62nd recipient of the Walter Brown Award as the top American-born player in New England college hockey, according to the BC athletics web site. The honor is presented by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.

A 5-foot-7, 150-pound native of Carneys Point, N.J., Gaudreau leads all NCAA Division I players in scoring this season with 32 goals and 37 assists for 69 points in 37 games, including 10 power-play goals and six game-winners.

A fourth-round draft choice of the NHL's Calgary Flames in 2011, Gaudreau also fashioned a 31-game scoring streak to tie a Hockey East Association record, and helped the Eagles to the 2013-14 Hockey East regular-season conference championship. He is also a preliminary finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for the second straight year, and has posted 74-91—165 points in 116 career collegiate games.

Gaudreau, 20, is the 24th Eagle to earn the Walter Brown Award, and the third BC player in the last four seasons to do so, along with Steve Whitney last year and goaltender John Muse in 2011. Three of Gaudreau's coaches have also won the award, in Jerry York (1967), Greg Brown (1990) and Mike Ayers (New Hampshire - 2003).

BC opens the 2014 NCAA Tournament on Saturday as the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Regional at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. The Eagles (26-7-4) will face the inaugural NCHC tournament champion Denver Pioneers (20-15-6) at 4 p.m., with the winner to advance to Sunday's regional final against the winner of Massachusetts Lowell and Minnesota State.

2014 Hobey Baker Award Finalists Announced

The finalists for the 2014 Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey have been announced. Included are six forwards, three goaltenders, and a defenseman (listed below in alphabetical order):

Carey and Gaudreau were Top 10 Hobey finalists a year ago, while Gaudreau was part of the 2013 Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists for the award that eventually went to St. Cloud State's Drew Leblanc.

The award's 27-member Selection Committee and an additional round of fan balloting (at www.hobeybakeraward.com from March 20-30) will now determine this year’s winner. The 10 finalists were chosen by all 59 Division I college hockey head coaches and by an inaugural online round of fan balloting.

The 2014 winner will be announced on April 11 in Philadelphia as part of the NCAA Division I Frozen Four men's ice hockey championship. Yale won last year's national title, its first ever, by beating ECAC rival Quinnipiac in Pittsburgh in the championship game.

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award will be handed out next month at the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four in Philadelphia. Barring a miraculous surge by someone else, my opinion (and that of many others) is that it's Johnny Gaudreau's to lose.

The junior forward from Boston College and Carney's Point, N.J., who was a Hobey Hat Trick finalist a year ago when the award went to St. Cloud State's Drew LeBlanc, has been on a tear since Halloween, and has been a major reason why the Eagles claimed the Hockey East regular-season crown and have been ranked at or near the top of the NCAA Division I roll all season long.

For starters, Gaudreau leads the nation with 30 goals and 34 assists for 64 points in 34 games. He's also the nation's top goal-scorer, is second in assists, and tied for sixth nationally with nine power-play goals. He's also notched six game-winning goals, including the deciding marker against Notre Dame in the Frozen Fenway contest in January, and has just 14 penalty minutes.

Perhaps most impressive of all is that Gaudreau has been held scoreless only once this entire campaign—and that was back in October at Minnesota. Since then he's been on a 29-game tear, collecting 27-29—56 points as BC has gone 25-5-4 overall to date. He's currently on a seven-game goal-scoring streak, and has recorded 18 multiple-point outings on the year, including a five-assist night against Maine on Jan. 18.

Two years after dazzling spectators with a highlight-reel end-to-end rush against Ferris State to seal BC's fourth NCAA title, Gaudreau, a 2011 fourth-round draft choice of the NHL's Calgary Flames, has the Eagles poised for another shot at winning college hockey's biggest prize. A second NCAA ring would add to his collection that also includes a 2011 Clark Cup championship with Dubuque (USHL), a gold medal with the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team, and three Beanpots with the Eagles.

And to think he was supposed to wind up at Northeastern, instead.

Just call him Gaudreau-bey Baker already.

Boston College Wins Fifth Straight Beanpot Title

Johnny Gaudreau’s scoring string is intact, and so is Boston College men’s hockey’s Beanpot Tournament winning streak after No. 1 BC upended No. 12 Northeastern by a 4-1 count on Monday night at TD Garden. The Eagles claimed their fifth consecutive trophy, continuing their longest-ever streak in Beanpot play, while the Huskies’ heartbreak continued for a 26^th straight February.

This one may have been just as excruciating for Northeastern as some of its other Beanpot losses in recent years, including a 7-6 overtime loss to BC in 2011. After BC’s Kevin Hayes and NU’s John Stevens traded goals over the first 40 minutes on Monday, the Eagles put the contest—and the title—away in the third stanza.

BC captain Patrick Brown notched what turned out to be the game-winner with 5:30 remaining in regulation, before Gaudreau, who also posted an assist on the evening to increase his point streak to 24 straight games, put the puck into an empty NU net with 1:16 left for his 25^th tally of the campaign. Brown then added insult to injury with his second goal of the night, and ninth of the season, with 50 seconds remaining.

Clay Witt recorded 36 saves for the Huskies (16-10-3), who last celebrated on Causeway Street in 1988, while Thatcher Demko made 29 stops for the Eagles (22-4-3), who wore the gold throwback uniforms they first donned at Frozen Fenway last month in a 4-3 victory over Notre Dame.

BC has now claimed 19 Beanpot crowns in all, and five in a row beginning in 2010.  Boston University, which still holds the overall tournament lead with 29 titles, fell to Harvard, 6-2, in Monday’s consolation contest.

Boston College Edges Notre Dame, 4-3, at Frozen Fenway

Junior forward Johnny Gaudreau scored two goals on Saturday night, including the game-winner in the third period, and ran his personal points string to 14 games as sixth-ranked Boston College edged No. 14 Notre Dame, 4-3, in the cold at Fenway Park in Boston.

Brendan Silk and Bill Arnold (shorthanded) also scored for B.C, which led 2-0, after 20 minutes. Mario Lucia, T.J. Tynan (power play) and Bryan Rust connected for UND, which forged ties of 2-2 and 3-3 before Gaudreau scored at 8:21 of the third period to ice it.

Gaudreau, a 2013 Hobey Baker Award finalist, had previously been named MVP of the Three Rivers Classic in Pittsburgh on Dec. 27-28, recording two goals and three assists as the Eagles swept Bowling Green and Penn State. The Carneys Point, N.J. native, who initiated his current scoring string with two goals against Northeastern on Nov. 1, has 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in his last 14 outings. He leads B.C. with 17-18—35 points through 19 contests this campaign, and in 98 career appearances at the Heights has registered 59-72—131 points.

Steve Summerhays finished with 17 saves for the Fighting Irish on Saturday, while Brian Billet made 20 stops for the Eagles, including one on his doorstep at the final buzzer when Notre Dame thought it had again scored the equalizer. The net came off its posts, the play was reviewed, and replays showed the puck never crossed the goal line. UND finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while B.C. went 0-for-9 in running its winning streak to five games.

It was also the first-ever conference meeting between the Eagles (13-4-2, 7-1-1 HEA) and the Fighting Irish (10-8-1, 3-5-1 HEA), the latter a former member of the now-defunct CCHA, and counted in the Hockey East standings. B.C. is also now 2-1-0 in NCAA games played at Fenway, including a 3-2 loss to rival Boston University in 2010, and a 2-1 victory over Northeastern in 2012. In each of the three games, the Eagles have unveiled commemorative gold jerseys, with the latest model shown above.

B.C. and Notre Dame will next meet on Feb. 28 at Chestnut Hill, Mass. to close out the 2013-14 regular season. The Eagles will host Providence this Friday and head to Brown on Saturday, while the Irish entertain Alabama-Huntsville this weekend.

In a non-conference tilt between Hockey East teams early Saturday at Fenway, former B.C. defenseman Mark Dennehy and his current Merrimack squad skated to a  1-1 tie with Providence. This Saturday, Hockey East returns to Yawkey Way when Northeastern faces UMass Lowell and Maine takes on Boston University.
