Quinnipiac Tops Princeton, 4-1, for Sweep

Ethan Wyttenbach and Matthew McGroarty each scored one goal and set up another as fifth-ranked Quinnipiac topped host Princeton, 4-1, this afternoon at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink before 2,230 on-lookers. The Bobcats thus completed a two-steep sweep in ECAC Hockey play, having bested the visiting Tigers by the same score on Saturday evening in Hamden, Conn.

McGroarty opened the scoring on Sunday, wristing a shot from the right circle into the far side of the Princeton net just over three minutes into the second period. David Ma responded for Princeton on a power play just under two minutes later, before Quinnipiac's Alex Power put the Bobcats ahead for good less than 90 seconds later off a deflection in front for his first goal of the season.

Antoni Verreault made it a two-goal game with a shot from the right circle on a power play nine minutes into the final frame, before Wyttenbach closed out the scoring on an empty-netter from center ice with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.

Dylan Silverstein finished with 21 saves in goal for Quinnipiac (24-5-3 overall, 15-2-1 ECAC Hockey), while Arthur Smith made 21 stops for Princeton (14-11-1, 10-8-0). The Bobcats outshot the Tigers, 25-22, and also won 40 of 70 faceoffs in all. Both teams finished 1-for-4 on the power play.

Quinnipiac remains in first place in ECAC Hockey, while Princeton falls to fifth. 

Princeton Wins Fourth Straight

After six straight losses, Princeton University men's hockey has now won four straight NCAA contests. 

Following a home sweep of Bentley in non-conference action on Jan. 25-26, the Tigers closed out the first month of the new calendar year with a 4-3 overtime victory at ECAC Hockey/Ivy League rival Harvard on Jan. 31. Kai Daniells notched the game-winner in the extra session, while David Ma recorded a goal and two assists in regulation. Princeton then opened February with a 3-1 win at Dartmouth the next night, also in ECAC Hockey/Ivy League play. Brendan Gorman led the Tigers with a goal and an assist, while Ethan Pearson stopped 19 shots following a 32-save effort at Harvard.

Princeton (10-10-1 overall, 5-8-1 ECAC Hockey) returns to ECAC Hockey action this weekend at home at Hobey Baker Rink, when it faces Clarkson on Friday and St. Lawrence on Saturday.

Princeton Defeats RPI, Wins Fourth Straight

Princeton University continued its recent roll by besting visiting Rensselaer, 6-2, on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers (5-4-1 overall, 3-4-1 ECAC Hockey) have now won four straight games, all at home, after topping Union on Friday and sweeping Ohio State last weekend. 

David Ma and Brendan Gorman each scored two goals for the Tigers against RPI, with Gorman adding an assist. David Jacobs set up a pair of goals for Princeton, which got 24 saves in net from Arthur Smith in his fourth straight victory.

Princeton is now off until Dec. 28, when it plays at Army West Point.  The Tigers return home on Jan. 3-4 against New Hampshire.

Princeton Edges No. 12 Providence in OT

Jack Cronin's one-man effort in overtime lifted Princeton University to a 3-2 victory over 12th-ranked Providence College on Tuesday night, in NCAA men's hockey action at Hobey Baker Rink in central New Jersey.

Cronin's backhand shot from the slot, following a solo rush through the neutral zone, eluded Providence netminder Philip Svedebäck (23 saves) up high on the glove side to lift the Tigers (10-9-0 overall) to their third consecutive win, all at home. Ethan Pearson made 36 stops for Princeton, which snuffed all six Providence power-play attempts, while Tigers defensemen David Ma and Pito Walton notched two assists apiece.

After Liam Valente opened the scoring for the Friars (12-7-6) on a tip-in goal less than three minutes into regulation, Adams Robbins responded later in the first period for Princeton with his own deflection, to knot matters at a goal apiece. The score then remained unchanged until Princeton's Nick Seitz and Providence's Riley Duran exchanged goals 21 seconds apart in the third stanza, setting the stage for Cronin's sudden-death heroics.

Tuesday marked the third contest between the former Eastern College Athletic Conference rivals since last season, which began with a two-step sweep by the Friars at home, but it was the first meeting at Hobey Baker Rink since 1997. Providence still leads the all-time series, which started in 1954, by a 25-13-3 count.

Princeton returns to ECAC Hockey play this weekend at Colgate and Cornell, while Providence will be idle until returning to Hockey East action on Jan. 27-28 at Maine.
