Hockey East Skaters Shine on NHL Sunday

Sunday marked a stellar day for former Hockey East skaters in National Hockey League play, particularly those from the two major Boston-area schools.

Kevin Hayes (Boston College) scored the winning goal in overtime for the Philadelphia Flyers, who also got three goals from Joel Farabee (Boston University) in a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders. It was Hayes' fourth career OT goal in NHL play, and Farabee's first career NHL hat trick.

Miles Wood (Boston College) scored two goals and added an assist in the New Jersey Devils' 5-3 victory at Buffalo. His first goal tied the game at three late in the second period, while his second goal was an insurance marker into an empty net late in the third period with New Jersey leading by a goal at the time.

Jordan Greenway (Boston University) set up the game-winning goal 18 seconds into OT as the Minnesota Wild outlasted the visiting Colorado Avalanche, 4-3. Cale Makar (Massachusetts) scored his first goal of the 2020-21 season for Colorado in the loss.

Last night, Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College) notched the game-winner as the Calgary Flames won, 2-0, at Montreal to snap a three-game winless skid. Like Makar, Gaudreau is a former Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner as the best player in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey.

Earlier this week, on Jan. 28, goaltender Jake Oettinger (Boston University) picked up his first NHL win for the Dallas Stars, making 20 stops in a 7-3 triumph at Detroit. Oliver Wahlstrom (Boston College) tallied his first career NHL goal for the Islanders that same evening in a 6-3 loss at Washington.

Former Maine Goalie Howard Retires from NHL

Long-time National Hockey League netminder Jimmy Howard (Maine) has called it a career.

Howard, 36, who spent all his time in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, has retired after playing in 14 seasons with the Original Six franchise. Drafted 64th overall by Detroit in 2003, he fashioned a 246-196-70 record with a 2.62 goals-average and a .912 save percentage to go with 24 shutouts in 543 regular-season outings. He was also named to three NHL All-Star Games (2012, 2015, 2019), went 21-26-0 with three shutouts in 48 Stanley Cup Playoff contests, and ranks third in Red Wings annals in regular-season games played and victories earned.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Howard prepped with the Westport Rideaus and the Kanata Valley Lasers in Canada before spending the 2001-02 season with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Michigan. He then played three years at the University of Maine, fashioning a 47-23-10 record in 92 all-time appearances. As a sophomore, he went 14-4-3 with a school-record 1.19 goals-against average and six shutouts as he backstopped the Black Bears to both the Hockey East tournament championship and the NCAA national title game. He also collected Hockey East Goaltender of the Year, Hockey East Tournament MVP, and NCAA Second Team All-America accolades that season.

Howard also skated in 192 career American Hockey League outings with the Grand Rapids Griffins after turning professional. He went 94-75-11 (2.66, 1.92) with 15 shutouts in regular-season play, and finished 12-17-0 in 30 Calder Cup Playoff contests. He also garnered AHL All-Rookie Team honors in 2006, four years before he did the same at the NHL level.

On the international stage, Howard represented the U.S. at the 2002 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, the World 2003 World Junior Championship, the 2012 and 2017 World Championships, and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. He won gold with the U.S at the World Under-18s in 2002, and went 9-4-0 with two shutouts in 13 games in World Championship play.

Notre Dame to Host 2021 Big Ten Tournament

The University of Notre Dame will host this year's single-elimination Big Ten tournament at its Compton Family Ice Arena on March 18-20.

The second through seventh seeds will play the first day of the tournament, with the surviving three schools and the top seed then playing on the second day. The two survivors of those semifinals will meet for the championship on the third day, with the winner of that game ostensibly earning the conference's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Last year's Big Ten and NCAA tournaments were both canceled by COVID-19.

Minnesota (13-3-0 overall) currently leads the Big Ten standings. Arizona State is playing as a Big Ten affiliate this season, but is not eligible for the conference tournament.

Michigan (10-6-0), which is in second place in the Big Ten, recently shut down winter athletics activity due to COVID-19, as did Hockey East member Boston University.

Former RedHawk Roslovic Returns to Columbus

Columbus-born Jack Roslovic (Miami) is heading home to Ohio.

Roslovic was part of the Saturday NHL deal that sent him and fellow Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine to the Columbus Blue Jackets, in exchange for forward Pierre-Luc Dubois and a third-round 2022 draft choice.

Drafted 25th overall by Winnipeg in 2015 after his second season with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Michigan, the six-foot, 187-pound Roslovic played his formative years with the Ohio Blue Jackets program. He skated the 2015-16 season with Miami, where he tallied 10 goals and 26 points in 36 outings with the RedHawks in his lone NCAA campaign.

The following year he turned pro with Manitoba (AHL), notching 13 goals and 48 points in 65 games while also making his NHL debut with Winnipeg. He split the next season between the AHL and NHL, collecting 20 goals and 29 assists for 49 points between the top two pro levels.

Roslovic, 23, joined the Jets full-time for the 2018-19 campaign, and to date has tallied 26-41—67 points in 180 NHL regular-season appearances, all with Winnipeg. He has also recorded five assists in 20 career Stanley Cup playoff contests with the Jets.
