Whittet Stepping Down at Brown

Brown University men's hockey head coach and 1993 graduate Brendan Whittet will step down at the end of the 2025-26 regular season for family medical reasons. He will be replaced by assistant coach Jason Smith for the remainder of the campaign, and will transition into a new role in Brown's athletics administration upon his return from leave, according to USCHO.com.

Whittet, 54, has compiled an overall record of 149-259-59 to date at the helm of his alma mater since taking over in 2009-10, including a berth in the 2013 ECAC Hockey championship game and three league semifinal appearances. Prior to that, he served 11 seasons as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College following two years as an assistant at Brown. A native of East Providence, R.I., he recorded two goals and nine assists for 11 points in 73 games on defense for the Bears over four seasons while helping them to the 1993 NCAA tournament as a senior, their last NCAA berth to date.

Brown is currently 4-16-0 overall (3-9-0 ECAC Hockey) and will face Colgate and Cornell at home this weekend at Meehan Auditorium in conference play. The university has already begun its search for a new head coach.
