Three MSU Spartans Turn Pro

Michigan State will have to do without three key contributors going forward, all of whom recently signed NHL contracts.

Freshman right wing Porter Martone was the first to go, signing on Sunday with the Philadelphia Flyers, who drafted him sixth overall last year. Martone, 19, paced the Spartans this past year with 25 goals and 50 points in his only NCAA campaign, after skating three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League. The Peterborough, Ont. native, who played in two IIHF World Junior Championships for Canada, made his NHL debut on March 31 at Washington, and picked up his first pro point with an assist against Detroit tonight.

Junior goaltender Trey Augustine has signed with the Detroit Red Wings, who selected him 41st overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and has been assigned to Detroit's top minor-league affiliate in Grand Rapids (AHL). Augustine, 21, from South Lyon, Mich. fashioned a 24-9-1 record in 34 games this past season, with a 2.11 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage, while earning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year accolades. In three years with the Spartans, he went 66-25-7 with a 2.40 GAA over 99 career outings while notching nine shutouts and backstopping MSU to three consecutive Big Ten conference regular-season titles and two tournament crowns. He also won two gold medals with the U.S. at the WJCs, after prepping with the U.S. National Junior Team Development Program, and is a finalist this year for both the Mike Richter Award (top NCAA goalie) and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award (top NCAA player).

Junior defenseman Maxim Strbak has signed with the Buffalo Sabres, who drafted him 45th overall in 2023, and has been assigned to Rochester (AHL). Strbak, 20, from Kosice, Slovakia, notched three goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 37 games this past season with MSU, and in three years in East Lansing collected 8-38—46 points over 102 appearances. A product of Sioux Falls (USHL), he also participated in four consecutive WJCs for Slovakia.

MSU's 2025-26 campaign ended with a 4-3 overtime loss to Big Ten rival Wisconsin in the NCAA Worcester (Mass.) Regional final on March 29, one game short of the Frozen Four.

ADDENDUM: Michigan State sophomore defenseman Colin Ralph and senior forward Daniel Russell have also signed pro contracts, with the St. Louis Blues and Wilkes-Barre Scranton (AHL), respectively. Ralph, 20, from Maple Grove, Minn., collected 2-16—18 points in 69 career games with St. Cloud State and MSU, after being drafted 48th overall by the Blues in 2024. Russell, from Traverse City, Mich., totaled 43-70—113 points in 140 career outings at MSU, after playing three years in the USHL and one in the NAHL.

MSU Wins Third Straight Big Ten Title

Michigan State has won its third consecutive Big Ten Conference regular-season title following last night's 7-1 win at Minnesota. The Spartans are the first Big Ten school to turn the trifecta since the conference began play in 2013.

It is also the first time MSU has won three consecutive regular-season conference titles, although the Spartans did win back-to-back regular-season crowns during their time in the original central Collegiate Hockey Association.

MSU (25-7-1 overall, 16-6-1 Big Ten) will close out its 2025-26 regular season tonight at Minnesota, and will have a first-round bye in the Big Ten championship, which it has claimed the last two years.

Michigan State Men's Hockey Back to No. 1

Michigan State has regained the top spot in both the USCHO.com and USAHockey.com NCAA Division I men's college hockey polls this week after splitting with archrival Michigan, the former No. 1, last weekend.

MSU garnered 30 of 50 first-place votes in the Feb. 9 USCHO.com poll, and 18 of 34 first-place votes in the corresponding USA Hockey poll. Rounding out the top five in both rankings were Michigan, North Dakota, Western Michigan and Quinnipiac.

MSU fell, 4-3 in overtime, at Michigan last Friday, but rebounded to earn its third consecutive "Duel in the D" trophy with a 6-2 victory the next night in Detroit. The Spartans (22-6-0 overall) return to Big Ten action this weekend against Notre Dame.

MSU Wins Third Straight Duel in the D

For the third year in a row, the "Duel in the D" went to Michigan State. Second-ranked MSU scored the first four goals of the game en route to a 5-2 victory over No. 1 Michigan tonight before 19,515 onlookers at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. MSU also avenged a 4-3 overtime loss last night in Ann Arbor to gain the series split, while also leapfrogging the Wolverines by one point for first place in the Big Ten conference.

Tiernan Shoudy and Tommi Männistö tallied a goal and an assist each for MSU (22-6-0 overall, 13-5-0 Big Ten), while Maxim Štrbák notched two assists. Trey Augustine made 25 saves for the Spartans, while Jack Ivankovic stopped 34 shots for Michigan (23-5-0, 14-4-0) in his return to action since suffering an injury in mid-January. MSU outshot Michigan, 37-27, on the night, and also killed off all three Michigan power play attempts while recording two shorthanded shots on goal.

MSU is at Notre Dame on Feb. 20-21, while Michigan will host Penn State next weekend.

MSU Tops Penn State Outdoors

Charlie Stramel capped his first career collegiate hat trick with the game-winning goal in overtime as No. 2 Michigan State defeated fifth-ranked host Penn State, 5-4, before 74,575 spectators at Beaver Stadium this afternoon. MSU is now 3-2-1 in outdoor contests since the original Cold War was contested back in 2001.

Stramel scored just over three minutes into the extra session at the home of Penn State football, after the Spartans had battled back from 3-2 and 4-3 deficits in regulation. He also recorded an assist to go with his three goals, while linemates Porter Martone and Daniel Russell also finished with four points apiece. Trey Augustine made 31 saves for MSU (21-5-0 overall, 12-4-0 Big Ten), which swept its weekend Big Ten series with PSU following a 6-3 win at Pegula Ice Arena on Friday night. The Spartans have also won six straight games overall, and 10 of their last 11 outings.

Aidan Fink scored twice for Penn State (18-8-0, 10-6-0), while Dane Dowiak set up three goals for the Nittany Lions, who got 35 stops in net from Kevin Reider. MSU outshot PSU, 40-35, on the day, and also went 1-for-2 on the power play, with Stramel supplying that goal. The Spartans will now face No 1 Michigan twice next weekend, including the annual "Duel in the D" matchup in Detroit, while PSU is off until playing at Michigan on Feb. 13-14.

Michigan Blanks MSU in Opener, 3-0

Michigan held on to its No. 1 ranking with a 3-0 win in Big Ten play last night at third-ranked Michigan State. It was the Wolverines' first shutout of MSU at Munn Ice Arena since February 2000.

Malcolm Spence scored just over five minutes into the contest to give Michigan a 1-0 lead, before Aidan Park and Jayden Perron closed out the scoring in the third period. Jack Ivankovic made 23 saves for the Wolverines (16-3-0 overall, 7-2-0 Big Ten), who have won five straight games, while Trey Augustine finished with 24 stops for the host Spartans (11-4-0, 4-3-0).

The two archrivals will close out their home-and-home series tonight at Michigan's Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor (7 p.m. ET, BIG+).

ADDENDUM: Anthony Romani scored in both the second and third periods, including the game-winning goal, and Trey Augustine made 30 saves as MSU rebounded for a 3-1 win in the rematch at Michigan. The Spartans scored the final three goals of the game, and outshot the Wolverines, 33-31, on the night. The two schools will meet again on Feb. 6 in Ann Arbor, and then again on Feb. 7 in Detroit.

Spartans Sweep No. 1 BU on the Road

There will be a new No. 1 team in NCAA Division I men's college hockey next week. Michigan State University saw to that.

The third-ranked Spartans knocked No. 1 Boston University from its pedestal following a two-step sweep this weekend at Agganis Arena in Boston.

On Friday, MSU (3-1-0 overall) got goals from four different players, and 18 saves from Trey Augustine, en route to a 4-2 victory, MSU's first win at BU since the 1950s. Gavin O'Connell and Matt Basgall also set up two goals apiece for the visiting Spartans. Mikhail Yegorov made 30 stops for the host Terriers.

On Saturday, BU (2-2-1) scored three times in the third period to tie the contest, but Basgall connected just under four minutes into overtime to lift MSU to a 4-3 win, its third straight triumph overall. Augustine made 31 saves for the Spartans, who also got a goal and an assist from Porter Marone, while Yegorov made 30 stops for BU.

MSU plays another non-conference series next weekend at Northern Michigan before opening its Big Ten slate, while BU will enter Hockey East play with a home-and-home series against UConn.

Michigan State's Howard Jumps to NHL

Reigning Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner Isaac Howard won't be returning to Michigan State University for his final collegiate season.

Howard, 21, who led the Spartans to back-to-back Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles the last two years, has signed with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers after his rights were traded to the two-time Western Conference champions by the Tampa Bay Lightning, who had drafted him 31st overall in 2022.

A native of Hudson, Wisc., Howard led MSU in scoring as a junior last season with 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points in 37 games, and then claimed the Hobey Baker Award. A 5-foot-11, 190-pound left wing, he had earlier been named as the 2024-25 Big Ten Player of the Year, and went on to help Team USA to its first gold medal at the IIHF Men's World Championship since 1933.

A product of the U.S. National Development Team Program, Howard collected 34-54—88 points in 73 career games over two years with MSU, helping the Green and White to two NCAA tournaments, after transferring from Minnesota-Duluth. He is the third Spartan to ever win the Hobey Baker Award, following center Kip Miller (1990) and goaltender Ryan Miller (2001).

MSU Routs Michigan, 6-1, in Detroit

The "Duel in the D" trophy will remain in East Lansing. Second-ranked Michigan State University routed No. 13 Michigan, 6-1, on Saturday night before 19,515 fans at Little Caesars Arena in the annual contest between the two archrivals in Detroit.

After Tyler Duke tied the game midway through the second period for Michigan, MSU erupted for five goals over the next 21 minutes to put the contest away. Six different skaters scored for the Spartans, who were led by Joey Larson's one goal and two assists. Shane Vansaghi, Gavin O'Connell and Isaac Howard notched a goal and an assist apiece for MSU, which also got two assists from Nicklas Andrews and finished two-for-five on the power play. Trey Augustine made 17 saves in net for the Spartans (22-5-3 overall, 13-4-3 Big Ten), and also added an assist. Cameron Korpi finished with 34 stops for the Wolverines (16-12-2, 10-9-1), who defeated MSU, 2-1, on Friday in East Lansing.

It was the fourth and final game of the 2024-25 regular-season series between MSU and U-M, with each team winning twice. Their next meeting could come as early as this year's Big Ten tournament, and then possibly again in the NCAA tournament. MSU will entertain Notre Dame this weekend in Big Ten play, while U-M will host Minnesota.

Michigan State Wins 2024 GLI

For the first time in 15 years, Michigan State is the Great Lakes Invitational champion. The Spartans defeated Western Michigan, 3-1, on Monday night at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. in the 2024 title game.

Joey Larson scored the game-winning goal, then set up an insurance marker by Isaac Howard in the third period, to lift top-ranked MSU to its first GLI crown since 2009 at the now-demolished Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. GLI MVP Luca Di Pasquo stopped 29 shots for the Spartans, one night after making 16 saves in a 2-0 opening-round victory over Northern Michigan.

WMU had advanced to this year's championship contest by besting Michigan Tech, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday. MTU then won the consolation game, 4-3 in OT, over NMU yesterday.

MSU has now won 13 GLI titles all-time dating back to the tournament's start in 1965, second behind only former participant Michigan's 17 crowns. Next year's GLI field, the fourth straight that will be played at the VAA in West Michigan, will again feature co-hosts MSU and MTU, plus Ferris State and Miami (Ohio).

Michigan State Downs No. 1 Minnesota

Minnesota was the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division men's hockey last week. It won't be this week, after suffering a 3-3 tie and a 5-3 loss to No. 3 Michigan State this weekend in a Big Ten conference series.

On Friday, Brodie Ziemer scored twice for Minnesota, including the game-tying goal in the third period, but the Golden Gophers fell in the shootout as MSU's Karsen Dorwart and Daniel Russell scored the only extra-session goals after a scoreless five-minute overttime. Trey Augustine made 40 saves in regulation for the visiting Spartans, plus two more in the shootout.

On Saturday, MSU overcame a 3-1 deficit after 40 minutes by tallying four third-period goals, with Maxim Štrbák scoring one goal and setting up another. Isaac Howard scored twice for the Spartans (13-2-1 overall, 6-1-1 Big Ten), while Augustine made 24 stops in net. Liam Souliere had 25 stops for the Golden Gophers (15-3-2, 8-1-1), who saw a six-game unbeaten streak snapped this weekend.

The two schools will meet again on Jan. 24-25 in East Lansing, Mich.

ADDENDUM: MSU regained the top spot in this week's USCHO.com poll, garnering 31 of 50 first-place votes.

UND, MSU to Meet in 2026 HHOF Game

The 2026 U.S Hockey Hall of Fame Game will take place on Halloween that year in Texas. The University of North Dakota and Michigan State University will meet at the H-E-B Center in Austin, home of the AHL's Texas Stars.

UND leads the all-time series with MSU, 64-37-3, dating back to the first meeting on Feb. 10, 1950. UND blanked the Spartans, 6-0, on Oct. 13, 2007 in the Hall of Fame Game that year in Grand Forks, N.D. The two schools last met on Nov. 26, 2016, a 2-2 tie in Grand Forks. UND also defeated MSU, 5-3, in the 1987 NCAA championship game in Detroit. The Fighting Hawks upended Penn State, 6-4, in the 2021 Hall of Fame Game in Nashville, in their last appearance to date in that contest.

Next year's Hall of Fame game will occur in Nov. 2025 at Ball Arena in Denver, between the University of Denver and the University of Minnesota.

BC Blanks MSU in Season Opener

Will Vote scored twice and Oskar Jellvik added another goal, all in the second period and at even strength, as second-ranked Boston College blanked No. 4 Michigan State by a 3-0 count tonight at MSU's Munn Ice Arena. BC is now 1-0-0 overall on the 2024-25 season, while MSU fell to 2-1-0.

BC goaltender Jacob Fowler picked up his first shutout of the season, and the fourth of his NCAA career, with 24 saves, while five different Eagles recorded assists on the night. Trey Augustine stopped 26 shots for the Spartans, who were outshot, 29-24, and went 0-for-2 on the power play before 6,555 on-lookers. MSU still leads the all-time series between the two schools, 17-12-1, although BC has now won the last six meetings, including a pair at home last year.

The Eagles and Spartans wrap up their two-game series tomorrow night at Munn (6 p.m. ET, B1G+).

ADDENDUM: In the rematch, MSU got two goals from Wisconsin transfer Charlie Stramel, the game-winner from Daniel Russell late in the second period, and 32 saves in all from Augustine as the Spartans edged BC, 4-3. It was the 600th victory all-time for MSU at Munn, which first opened its doors in 1974. Jellvik had two assists for the Eagles, while Fowler made 25 stops.

Gilbert Joins MSU as Third Netminder

Michigan State has added a third goaltender for 2024-25.

Dolan Gilbert has formally joined the Spartans as a junior, after practicing with them last season. A 6-foot-2 netminder from South Bend, Ind., Gilbert, 23, spent the 2022-23 season at NCAA Division III Concordia University/Wisconsin (NCHA), where he played in seven games, stopping 158 shots over 247 minutes. Prior to that, he played two seasons for the Texas Jr. Brahmas (NA3HL), where he fashioned a 40-7-2 record with a 2.07 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in 52 total appearances.

Gilbert will now back up Trey Augustine (23-9-2, 2.96, .915) and Luca Di Pasquo (2-1-1, 2.42, .910), who backstopped MSU to its first-ever Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles last year.

Spartans Sweep Penn State

Michigan State hockey has continued its winning ways in the new calendar year.

A week after besting the U.S. National Team Development Program in an exhibition contest, the eighth-ranked Spartans maintained their hold on first place in the Big Ten conference with 5-0 and 7-3 victories at Penn State this weekend.

Fresh off winning a gold medal with Team USA at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, MSU goaltender Trey Augustine made 31 saves in the opener at Penn State on Friday for the shutout, the second of his freshman campaign. Joey Larson led all Spartan scorers with two goals and an assist. In the rematch on Saturday, Augustine made 27 stops while seven different skaters scored goals for the Spartans, with Reed Lebster, Red Savage and Gavin O'Connell contributing a goal and an assist apiece.

MSU (15-4-3 overall, 9-1-2-1 Big Ten), which is one point ahead of second-place Wisconsin in the Big Ten standings and is also on six-game unbeaten string in NCAA action, will next play a home-and-home series with archrival Michigan on Jan. 19-20.

Hastings Leaves MSU for Wisconsin

Longtime Minnesota State men's hockey coach Mike Hastings has been named the new head coach at Wisconsin. The St. Cloud State alumnus takes over the reins from Tony Granato, who was let go earlier this month by the Badgers.

Originally from Eugene, Ore. Hastings coached his final game at MSU in the Mavericks' 4-0 loss to St. Cloud in the 2023 NCAA Fargo Regional on March 23. Last season he took MSU to its first-ever NCAA Division I national title game, where the Mavs fell to Denver, 5-1, in Boston.

In 11 seasons at the MSU helm, Hastings, 57, compiled a record of 299-109-25, all with at least 21 victories, and also guided the Mavericks to nine NCAA tournament berths. They also won six WCHA regular-season and three WCHA tournament crowns under his tutelage, along with two of each title in the new CCHA that began play in 2021-22. He earned the Spencer Penrose Trophy three times as the top men's hockey head coach in NCAA Division I, including these last two seasons.

Prior to taking the top jab in Mankato, Hastings served as the coach and general manager of the USHL's Omaha/River City Lancers from 1994 to 2008, where he was named USHL General Manager of the Year on five occasions. He then rejoined the college ranks, and served one season as an assistant coach with Minnesota, and three years as the associate head coach at Nebraska-Omaha, before moving on to MSU in 2012.

Wisconsin finished 13-23 overall this season, and was last in the Big Ten with a 6-18 conference mark.

Michigan State Sweeps LIU at Munn Arena

Michigan State improved to 4-2-0 on the nascent 2022-23 NCAA season with a sweep of visiting LIU over the weekend.

The Spartans outlasted the Sharks, 3-1, on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena, in the first-ever hockey meeting between the two schools. David Gucciardi tallied the game-winning goal early in the second stanza to break a one-all tie, while Dylan St. Cyr finished with 14 saves for the hosts.

On Saturday evening, MSU scored the first four goals of the contest en route to an 8-4 victory. Karsen Dorwart posted four assists for the Spartans, while Jagger Joshua scored three goals and Tanner Kelly and Daniel Russell set up three goals apiece. Pierce Charleson made 23 stops for the win.

Saturday's result marked the most goals scored by an MSU team since an 8-2 triumph over visiting Princeton on Dec. 1, 2013. That win that also clinched a two-game nonconference series triumph at Munn.

The Spartans returns to Big Ten play on Oct. 28-29, with two games at Notre Dame.

Mike Scala (1970-2022)

I worked in sports information at Montclair State (NJ) University from Nov. 2000 to Sept. 2005, after three tours of ice hockey publicity duty in Michigan. My supervisor all five of those years was Michael Scala.

Mike taught me much about many different sports that didn't include a small black rubber puck, including baseball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, softball and wrestling. I also remember my interview with him in what would be my first office at Montclair State, in a two-story house on Normal Avenue, just off campus.

I wore a suit. Mike told me I was overdressed.

I got to know Mike well over the next several years and the myriad fall, winter and spring sports seasons. I was fortunate enough he let me travel to Florida five times during spring break with different Red Hawks teams, four with softball to Orlando/Fort Myers, and once with baseball to Tampa. The only other time I had ever gone on spring break was to Anchorage, Alaska in 1992, and only because I was living 350 miles away in Fairbanks at the time.

I also got to go to San Diego my first year, to the 2001 College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) annual convention, when Mike could have easily gone to California himself. I remember accompanying him on such MSU basketball trips to places like William Paterson University and Manhattanville College, for statistical support, with me usually keeping the written, spiral-bound NCAA scorebook, including player fouls. I also attended Mike's wedding to his wife, Jamie, early on in my tenure at MSU, when I had been at the university just over a year's time.

Working in NCAA Division III athletics was a bit different than my experience in Division I (Michigan State) or Division II (Alaska Fairbanks), but the statistics are the same, and the student-athletes do truly play for the love of the game, with no scholarships or financial aid or pro career prospects. I didn't work with ice hockey, which is a club sport at MSU, but I met a lot of good people in Red Hawk varsity athletics. Case in point: Mike and Jamie and other MSU athletics staff were good enough to attend my grandmother's wake just one month after 9/11, even though they had only known me for 10 months or so. I can never repay them for that kindness.

Besides MSU, Mike was a big fan of the New York Giants, the New York Mets, and Bruce Springsteen, among other things—but he was also a hockey fan, particularly of the New York Rangers. Having interned with the NHL in 1993-94, I bequeathed him a copy of the Rangers media guide from that season, in which they won their first Stanley Cup crown in 54 seasons (and their last one to date). One night he even told me that I wouldn't be working an outside, non-MSU basketball game scheduled at MSU's Panzer Gym, because he knew I had New Jersey Devils tickets that evening. I also worked with Mike the sole season of the original XFL in 2001, writing back-up stats for the NY/NJ Hitmen at the now-demolished Giants Stadium.

I left MSU in 2005, wanting to move on from sports information after almost 14 years, and went on to become a journalist. Mike thanked me for my loyalty, and also helped me in my job search as a reference. He remained at MSU, his alma mater, although he also worked for Monmouth University, the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the Pinstripe Bowl, the New York Jets, and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in his storied career, while also helping the MAAC to land the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Frozen Four in Buffalo. He went on to earn a host of sports information and athletics awards for his ability and longevity, but he just really enjoyed what he did, whether it was scoring games, updating the website, designing yearbooks, and so much more, especially caring for MSU's many, many student-athletes and coaches.

I saw him sporadically over the years that followed, mostly at MSU, and even once at Nutley High School's graduation ceremony. The last time I remember seeing him was at Kean University in 2018, a year before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the year before he was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame. He was most definitely a good man, and I figured I'd see Mike at another game again somewhere down the road, after the world more or less got back to normal.

On Thursday, I visited MSU for the last-ever New Jersey Jackals minor-league baseball game at Yogi Berra Stadium, a place where Mike had overseen hundreds of Red Hawk baseball games. I also passed by the Burger King in Cedar Grove where Mike took me for lunch on my first day at MSU, over 20 years ago.

Mike was just 51 years old when his three-year battle with colon cancer ended early this morning. He would have turned 52 in September. He is survived by his wife, Jamie, and their three children, Jenna, Michael and Joelle. I hope people will keep them all in their prayers. Donations to the family can be made at https://bit.ly/3pM2rsi.

Today I tuned the radio to Q104.3 FM just as Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" began to play. I remember how Mike and I would joke about that song in the press box at MSU's Sprague Field, as one of the Red Hawk teams back then used it for their warm-ups. We used to recite the speech made by the villainous Clubber Lang in the film "Rocky III", when he told trainer Mickey Goldmill that he demanded a shot at world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Balboa ("I want Balboa!"). Those few minutes of music brought back a lot of good memories.

Rest in peace, my friend, and Go Red Hawks.

Tom Campbell 1948-2022

Last week saw the passing of Tom Campbell, the longtime manager of Munn Ice Arena at Michigan State University. He was a genuinely good man who was always happy to see you, and who always had a smile and a kind word.

I first met Tommy in 1994, when I played in the adult Sunday night league at Munn my first year at MSU. I used to line up against him at wing sometimes, his team usually getting the better of mine by a large margin. He was smiling then, too, as he said hello.

I recall how he was supposed to accompany Spartan Hockey to the College Hockey Showcase at the now-demolished St. Paul Civic Center in Minnesota in Nov. 1994, but had to remain in East Lansing to take care of a problem that developed with the ice at Munn. It was his baby, and there was no one better to handle it.

I saw Tom intermittently after I moved to Grand Rapids, Mich. in 1996, usually while attending games at MSU in my spare time. I saw him only once more (at Munn, of course) after leaving Michigan for good in 2000, when I last visited in 2007, and got to talk with him in his office, which blended invisibly into the walls on the main concourse at Munn. He told me the Sunday night league was unfortunately a thing of the past, but it was just good to see him again.

Tom was not only the caretaker of Munn, which has ice for all but one month a year, but he was the first player from the Greater Lansing Amateur Hockey Association to suit up for the Spartans, in the late 1960s under legendary head coach Amo Bessone. He later took over the management of Munn in 1985, after spending time working at the now-defunct Lansing Ice Arena and the MSU Physical Plant. He also played a large part in events such as the Cold War at Spartan Stadium in 2001, which launched the ongoing wave of outdoor hockey games in the 21st century.

My condolences to his wife, Kelly, and their daughter, Grace, on his passing. He will definitely be missed.

Rest in peace, Tommy, and say hi to Jerry Marshall and Coach Mason for us up there. Go Green.

GLI Moving to Grand Rapids for 2022

The Great Lakes Invitational is moving west.

For the first time ever, the annual holiday college hockey tournament will be played outside Detroit, as the 2022 version will be contested on Dec. 27-28 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., home of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.

The semifinals for the 57th incarnation of the GLI will feature Michigan Tech against Western Michigan, and Michigan State versus Ferris State, with the winners meeting on the second day for the title. Longtime GLI participant Michigan, which holds the tournament record with 17 championships, will not be a part of the field for the first time since 1973.

The GLI began in 1965 at the Olympia in Detroit, before moving to Joe Louis Arena in 1979 and then Little Caesars Arena in 2017. The 2018 version was contested outdoors at Comerica Park, home of Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers, while the 2020 edition was canceled due to COVID-19. Last year's tournament was held on campus sites, with MSU hosting Western and Tech, and Michigan hosting MTU before the Wolverines bowed out the next night against WMU due to extenuating circumstances.

MTU won the last regular GLI title in 2019, defeating Michigan in the final.

Van Andel Arena has previously hosted a number of college hockey games, including Ferris State-Michigan State and Michigan-Western Michigan regular-season contests in its first season of operation (1996-97). The facility has also hosted NCAA men's hockey regionals in 1997, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2013.
